I would get a "second opinion" from an attorney practicing in the same geographic area and in the same area of law. Keep in mind that the only numbers you can get are speculations and estimates the attorney can make after considering the circumstances. Also, even if you haven't gotten suggested medical treatment, make sure that all of your past medical bills are part of the settlement since they have a tendency to haunt people long time after the case is closed. Smartie's answer sounds pretty good. I would add that any attorney who worked on your case probably has the right to be compensated for his/her efforts. They can file a lien on the case and you won't be able to settle without them (the prior attorney) getting his/her fee. They can't top you from settling but can make a claim for part of the settlement proceeds. The insurance company who pays the check will include the attorney's name on the settlement draft and you'll have to get the attorney's signature on it to cash it.
