While Concorde was in service, Cessna and Gulfstream both developed jets that were faster than any other airliner. Concorde's publicity and fame prevented the general media from covering the achievements of these two companies.

Currently, the fastest passenger aircraft in service is the Cessna Citation X, which is can cruise at speeds of Mach .92. According to Cessna, it is capable of flight level 510. Close behind Cessna is Gulfstream's G-V, also certificated to flight level 510. It is slower than the Citation X with a maximum cruise speed of Mach .86.

These two business jets are the fastest passenger airliners in service but chances are that most of us will never get to ride in one. If your interested in buying one for yourself, expect a tab of anywhere between 35 and 45 million. Not to mention you would also need to hire your own pilots, pay for your own fuel, plus pay for landing and storage fees.

Large passenger airliners, such as the Boeing 747 or the Airbus A330, are capable of "maxing out" at Mach .95 or even cruising at Mach .85. However when it comes to economy versus speed, the airlines lean toward the one that leaves them with a bigger bank account. It is also not always practical to continually push the limits of these large jets even though they are quite capable of doing so. They operate within a safety margin that can be pushed but has no real need to be. On the other hand, these little biz jets that I enumerated above have higher maximums. Therefore, normal cruise for a G-V or a Citation X may be maxing out the abilities of a 777 or an A340.
