  • Maybe they should, but as it is right now the people don't even pick the president, the electoral college does.
  • Well they are limited right now because that's what the constitution says. One day, hopefully, every vote will really count.
  • About the limitation of the President to two terms: Remember Hitler? He came to power by legitimate democratic procedures. That's why. A very popular leader could bring a democracy without this restriction easily on a dangerous way. If a President should be over 34 years, it is not only because he could have a better maturity, it is also because, if everything gets wrong, they would die earlier... I think a not born American is supposed not to have completely integrated the American national identity and could bring an unacceptable advantage for their country of origin. There is a very interesting article about the critic of liberal democracy here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_democracy#Advantages_and_disadvantages_of_liberal_democracy Here a list of the issues discussed in that article: "5 Advantages and disadvantages of liberal democracy 5.1 Lacking direct democracy 5.1.1 Dictatorship of the Bourgeoisie 5.2 Limited voter turnout 5.3 Ethnic and religious conflicts 5.4 Bureaucracy 5.5 Short-term focus 5.6 Public choice theory 5.7 Majoritarianism 5.8 Political stability 5.9 Effective response in wartime 5.10 Better information on and corrections of problems 5.11 Corruption 5.12 Terrorism 5.13 Economic growth and financial crises 5.14 Famines and refugees 5.15 Human development 5.16 Democratic peace theory 5.17 Mass murder by government 5.18 Freedoms and rights 5.19 Happiness " An interesting notion is: "The "tyranny of the majority" is the fear that a democratic government, reflecting the majority view, can take action that oppresses a particular minority. "
  • The US is not a direct democracy, where the people have the ultimate direct decision. It is a Constitutional Republic (which is also a form of democracy). But the people *do* have the ultimate decision on who they want as President. If they want a 10-year old Lithuanian to be the next president, they can vote for representatives who will vote to amend the US Constitution to allow it. It's perfectly possible, and would certainly happen if the vast majority of US citizens actually wanted it to happen.
