Here's the Victoria, Australia perspective on this question:
Because we generally don't separate middle and high school and refer to them collectively as being high school (from year 7 - 12), we only have Primary School (which would be referred to as elementary shcool) and High School.

So given that definition, here's the answer that we'd give from Victoria, Australia:
In a way, it's harder for Primary school teachers - they need to be good at bits of everything given that they are a generalist teacher.

High school teachers specialise in at least 2 subjects - seldom do they have 1 subject unless it's physical education related - ie, PE and Outdoor Education (which is almost like a similar version of PE).

Whilst high school teachers have to be more specific and thorough in their knowledge base (ie, specialised), if they have an undergraduate degree that allows the university to determine that they have sufficient knowledge in a particular subject (or in subjects) and that they can then undertake a 1 year diploma of Education wherein they learn to apply their knowledge to a teaching context.
Without prior knowledge there is a possibility of undertaking a four year degree where the student learns not only the teaching skills but also the subject knowledge.

In my experience as a student, the level of training in elementary school and middle school teachers is more or less the same (bachelors or master's degree). In fact, many teachers will switch back and forth between the elementary and middle schools in my district.

The High school teachers are usually more qualified (masters degree, and/or work experience in their field) and just stick to high school. However, many high school teachers start lower down, and work their way up.

Although it does vary from teacher to teacher, most middle school teachers I know have an equal level of experience/training to elementary school teachers, but less than high school teachers.
