Yes, there is. The following comes from http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truck_driver_facts.shtml :

"How long can a driver legally drive in a day?

"Legal drive time is 11 hours of driving with 10 hours of break thereafter. The NEW rules require that after 14 hours from your begin time in a given day you have 10 hours break no matter how many miles you've driven. Up to 70 hours in an 8 day period. With NO overtime required to be paid after 40 hours. After 34 hours off duty they may RESET their 70 hours to regain a full 70 hours for the new week."

The reason for these rules is that there have been many accidents caused by truckers who tried to go too far with out rest and fell asleep at the wheel. A sleepy driver in a normal automobile can be dangerous. One in an eighteen wheeler could be disastrous.

"Grandma Roses: Is this a federal or a state law?"

    It is federal law.

In Canada, federal legislation limits the maximum driving time to 13 hours out of every 24 and the minimum off-duty time to 10 hours.

To expand a little on the answer given, the 8 day 70 hour clock is for operations that are 24/7 businesses, there is also a 7 day 60 hour restriction for companies that do not operate arond the clock. In addition there are allowances for a 2 hour extension in one service period that allows for inclimate weather or other instances where a driver has been delayed through no fault of there own that will still allow them to make it home without penalty or shutdown provided they have left from and are returning to the same base of operations. The regulations are drawn up by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and placed into law by the Congress. Enforcement of the laws is left up to the various State, County and local municipalities with the State having ultimate jurisdiction to accept or modify Federal regulations within a 3 year period of them being passed into law. Generally states accept them as written with the right to add to them for their own particular situations. One last note, the most recent changes in transportation regs is the first time they have been amended since 1939. Not many things from the Ferderal government stay unchanged for that length of time.
Be safe on the highways and don't forget if your happy you have something, thank a trucker!

Uhhh yeah. That is a big part of why truckers log books exist. Here's a link to a bunch of them if you would like to check them out. This is also where I get mine. http://www.12volt-travel.com/trip-log-book-planning-c-6.html
