Question

Help answer this question below.

I apologize for the vulgarity, but does having anal sex during pregnancy (or anytime, I guess) help in the prevention of hemorrhoids? I've never heard anything like this, but maybe b'cuz it's such a "taboo" subject.

Good question. I have performed a quick search of articles on the matter, and although the majority of papers relating to anal sex is focussed on receptive men, it should apply to women as well.

"Proctologic complications of anal intercourse include allergic reactions to anal lubricants, prolapsed hemorrhoids, and fistulas, and fissures. Rectosigmoid tears may result from fist, forearm, and foreign body penetration of the bowel."

Owen WF Jr. Sexually transmitted diseases and traumatic problems in homosexual men. Ann Intern Med. 1980 Jun;92(6):805-8.

"A clinical pattern of anorectal and colon diseases encountered with unusual frequency in these homosexual patients is termed the gay bowel syndrome. The clinical diagnoses in decreasing order of frequency include condyloma acuminata, hemorrhoids, nonspecific proctitis, anal fistula, perirectal abscess, anal fissure, amebiasis, benign polyps,......."

Kazal HL, Sohn N, Carrasco JI, Robilotti JG, Delaney WE. The gay bowel syndrome: clinico-pathologic correlation in 260 cases. Ann Clin Lab Sci. 1976 Mar-Apr;6(2):184-92.

Granted, these papers are older, but the evidence is likely to still be valid. Also admittedly, these are taken from the abstracts, rather then the full version of the article, but the general drift is quite clear.

The penetration of the anal canal causes trauma (on a physiological basis, even if it doesn't hurt/bleed and is enjoyable) and this seems to result in an increased risk of hemorroids. This does make sense, but it does not mean that having anal sex will cause hemorroids in everybody.

I would personally advise you to take it easy and slowly. If you do suffer from the hemhorroids, it's probably best to abstain from anal sex for the time being.

Yes, anal sex can actually put strain on intestines and cause hemorrhoids.

It looks like it doesnt prevent against hemorrhoids, but i was told that it does help lower the chance of you needing an episiotomy when delivering if the baby is a big one. I suppose it helps loosen or stretch the tissues in that area.

Haemorroids are the result of pelvic congestion in pregnancy and forcing a collection of blood vessels to pop out into a little ball so to speak. Anal sex will not prevent getting haemorroids during pregnancy or at any time.
