What was the true cause for the Gulf War (year 1991) between Iraq and the US? And is this extended war (11 years of sanctions and war extending into 2003 by President George W. Bush) a just and legal war with almost two million Iraqi people killed?

The true cause of the Gulf War in 1990-1991 started actually in the 1940's The US, after WW2 settled in the Middle east, and American Oil companies bought the rights to the area for drilling, they placed puppet governments in charge, one such country was Iran, were they placed the Shai of Iran. in the late 1970's groups of Iranian students began to question the government and reasons why the US owned the Oil fields, they wanted to Nationalize the Oil, so the overthrew the Shai. the US indirectly retaliated by Arming Iraq and instigating a war between Iraq and Iran. Iran won the war, and Iraq was broke. the US didn't send enough aid for Iraq, so Iraq decided to annex Kuwait, claiming that it was a lost providence of Iraq (Kuwait has more Oil than any other Arab nation, they are so rich that only 1% of the nation actually works), the US with the support of the United Nation asked Iraq to leave Kuwait, when they refused, a coalition of multinational troops lead by the US invaded Iraq, and forced them out of Kuwait, meanwhile, the Iraqis attacked a minority group that lived in their country, the Kurds, and used Sarine gas on them. the United Nations established a no fly zone south of the area that the Kurds lived in (the Northern part of Iraq). and also they placed economic sanctions on Iraq. after that, there were accusations of violations of the no fly zone on a number of occasions, and also in some cases UN inspectors were prohibited from inspecting some areas (such as royal palaces) When George W. Bush came in office, he asked to send troops to Iraq for violation of the no fly zone, but was denied by congress. he then asked to send troops because of claims that UN inspectors were not being allowed to inspect all areas, and was denied again. After 9/11 he told the American people that Iraq had developed Nuclear weapons and planned on using them in the near future (called, weapons of mass destruction for political purposes)and he also claimed that Iraq had a part in the 9/11 attacks. congress approved the use of forces to find and secure the weapons of mass destruction, but then the mission changed to the overthrow of the Iraqi government, then it changed to keeping Al Qieda out of Iraq, then changed again to securing the country for elections, and finally it changed to "helping the Iraqi people get "Freedom and Democracy"

The original 91 war was as a result of sadam invading Kuwait. A just war i think however the job should have been done properly and finished then instead of the illagal war that is still carrying on today

Iraq invaded Kuwait and threatened Saudi Arabia and the oil supply from the Middle East.
11 years of sanctions, not war; only a few planes that violated the no-fly zone shot down and a few SAM batteries that lit up our planes destroyed.
Two million? About 15-20,000 Iraqi troops died in the first Gulf War. You can look up the Iraqi casualties in the second, but the great majority of those were murders of Iraqis by other Iraqis.

Greed is the primary motavator - wealth and power a close second.

Tis the oil the natives own - certain somebodies want it - and the power such wealth brings.

    It's an age old story.

I'm be a Republican, so this might come as a surprise, but I do not support this war. I come from a large military (Marines, Navy, Air Force)family so the war also has a more personal connection for me.

Unfortunately, withdrawl isn't as easy as some make it seem. It's a complete clusterf**k over there, and we need some real resolve, answers, and action from our leaders. The whole situation in the Middle East in general is so complex and so full of turmoil I can't even begin to pinpoint causes/solutions.

Some people will spew hatred about Bush and his administration, and I agree that they seriously screwed up, but the blame doesn't rest in the hands of the GOP alone, and to say so is a complete fallacy. Hilary Clinton herself voted in favor of the Iraqi war.

This war is absolutely absurd at this point. It was one thing immediately after 9-11 and we were after Osama. This war is all agenda. Still doesn't mean I'll vote as a Democrat in 2008, though. Eight years ago I wanted John McCain to receive the nomination, and I'm still holding out hope for him!

looking for a true single reason for a major historical event like a war is a vain pursuit. There were many reasons, expressed and hidden by many people who joined in that war. you could look at the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Saddam's political machinations, The west's desire for oil and influence, the exploitation of the middle east by external powers, inter Arab struggles and many other historical and contemporary factors. There is no such thing as a just (or unjust) war. all wars are horrible and are driven by a multitude of motives. As to its legality, that depends on what authority one accepts. the warring parties in this case don't even pretend to abide by the same set of laws so the notion of legality is mute.
