  • Driving without your license is against the law, yes.
  • In my State (Ohio), yes. That's why I always leave my licence in my car :D I use other IDs for identification.
  • Yes in the US, No in the UK. In the US, you are expected to produce your license when stopped. In the UK, if you do not produce your license, you have 5 days to present it at a police station of your choice.
  • In Germany, you could theoretically get a 10 € fine, but they often don't do it. If you can prove you identity, they just look in their database and find out if your license is OK - but only if you have a German license. If not, it could get more complicated. Here some information about it in German: http://www.fahrtipps.de/forum/lesen.php?forum=4&nr=15491
  • I think so, yes. In most of the states. They can here in Maine, but don't very often, unless the person is rude or something.
  • In the UK technically yes, but you are given 7 days grace to produce your license at a police station of your choice.
  • Yes. Even if you have a license that is not on you, you are still in trouble. Just remember, cops can be schmucks too. Always better to be on the safe side, as the majority of cops will treat people like dirt. Once I had to call the cops because my wallet got stolen. When the cops showed up, I was asked for ID, which , of course, I didn't have anymore. The cops tried to say that I was responsible for my ID, and that I could get in trouble for failing to provide ID to a police officer. The cops continues to be real asses to me until a supervisor showed up. I told him what was going on, how my ID was just stolen and that is why I called them in the first place! He actually did the responsible thing, and chewed out the other cops for giving the victim they were there to serve grief for no reason.
  • My question is what they do when there is no way to identify you?
  • Not unless you get pulled over...I mean, you should always drive with your license because if you ever get pulled over or in a wreck you can be charged for driving without a license in your possesion even if you have a valid license and know the number, the authorities can still charge you with driving without a license in your physical possesion.
  • Yes, but typically unless the cop is an a-hole they will give you a chance to produce ID.
  • well i duno where ur from but where im from its ok if you leave it at home...our cops now have computer thingys in their car you give them your name and ss# and they type it in and a picture of your license...(if u have one) pops up...
  • Not in the uk it isn't, you will be given 7 days to produce it a police station of your choosing, if required to by a police officer.
  • Honestly, "driving without a license" means driving as an unlicensed driver. If you left your license at home they just look it up. It's not a big deal.
  • If you're pulled over, most of the time they'll ask you your social security # and look you up in the DMV database to make sure you HAVE a valid license...... if you checkout, they'll either scold you for not having it with you (this happened to me last month) or they might cite you for driving without having your licnese physically on you, but I think that's pretty rare.
  • Yes I got pulled over one time and didn't have mine. The officer was very nice but explained I was suppose to have my license on me anytime I was driving.
  • generally, most cops will give you a break if you can recall the number or they can pull you up on their computer. if you were stopped for more serious troubles , you can always get that portion dropped in court by producing your valid license and insurance. if your troubles are more serious, it will be the least of your worries.
  • Yes, it has happened to me a few times, when I just don't have it with me. Usually, the cops run the plates, and if you have this and the registration and insurance in order, let you go with a warning. But yes, it is illegal and you could get a big hassle if the cop felt like giving you a hard time. I.e. how do I know this is your car? etc
  • In Sweden, no. When you deive shorter distances it's no problem at all, as long as you have some other kind of identification
  • Depends on the cop, at least around here.
  • No not here in the UK, As long as you produce it to your nearest police station within 7 days if you get pulled over and they wanted to check your license.
  • Unfortunately, yes it is. Most cops will let you off with a warning if you were not pulled over for anything serious. I don't know if most people actually know their drivers license number or if I'm one of a few weirdos. I have mine memorized like my ss number.
  • Not in the U.K. it isnt.
  • In the UK, you are expected to carry your licence with you at all times. However, if you are stopped by police and you do not have your licence with you, they will not arrest you. They will do one of two things: A) Give you a 'producer' which is a legal document asking for your licence (and anything else they want, ie. proof of insurance) and you have to take the producer along with the licence etc. to a police station within 7 days to be checked. B) Radio in your name to the NPC (National Police Computer) to check if you have a licence, what type, how many points and if you are disqualified or not. Usually they go for B) unless they cannot prove your identity or get a result.
  • NO you dont need your id in all situations they will run a quick background check on the car, person, and registration even if it was most cops will let you go its the same thing if you were to go to a liquor store every sunday and you become a regular there they will not ask you for your id all the time it all depends if you left your license at home its pushing the law but its nothing serious
  • YES DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENCE IS AN OFFENSE...IF YOU FORGOT IT IN YOUR HOUSE THATS YOUR FAULT AND FACE THE CONSEQUENCE...IT'S LIKE GOING OUT OF YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT YOUR UNDERWEAR.
  • In my state it's called No License on Person or No Valid Operater License on Person. It is a traffic incfraction.
  • Yes, but typically many cops will let you slide if you can provide it within a reasonable amount of time. At any rate, I believe it's just a misdemeanor.
  • Not in the UK it isn't. If stopped by the police and you cannot produce your driving license you are given 7 days to do so at a police station of your choice.
  • Yes, in the US it is considered a violation. Usually if you can produce your license within 24 hours to the police the charge is dropped.
  • Most cops will allow you to bring it in for show and tell they can type your name in their 'puters to see if you are valid or not
  • Yeah it is a crime to drive without a license! In some areas the cop's will even tow your car.
  • Yes, but it can sometimes it depends on the mood of the cop. They can issue you a ticket for driving without a liscense, or they can give you a ticket for driving without PROOF of a liscence, which you can later prove.
  • if everything is in order and the policeman is nice and understanding, then you should be ok. Just in case you actually left it at home, drive extra careful!
  • Well I work at the PD looking up licenses sometimes...they might call you in to make sure your license is valid. And really think it depends on the officer and if you are being respectful to him/her. It can be an offense , yes.
  • NEVER give out your SSN to anyone in this case. If they give you a ticket, all you have to do is go to court and show a valid license and the court will dismiss the case and advise you to carry it in the future, which you will agree to do. end of issue. But there is not need to give a SSN. If you give your name and address they can check that against the vehicle records for a match. Common sense should always prevail.
  • no it is not an offense but it isa big hassle. they will hold you there and ask you all sorts of questions, then they will go back to their car and get some info on you ie. hair color weight height all the stff on your actaul license to conferm you are you. some cops will let you go with a warning but most will give you a ticket which says you have to go to the police station within 24 hours and show a valid drivers licence. if you dont show then they inpound the vehicle you were ddriving until you are arrested and that is serious jail time and fines.
  • Yes, But it shouldn't be a big deal considring if you have your license on your or not isn't going to change the way you drive.
  • YES ... You CAN be fined and / or have your license suspened by the court that driving without your license ..... You an even be taken to JAIL and held until someone brings your Drivers license ....
  • In the UK it is not an offense , as long as you produce all your documents at the Police Station within 5 days.
  • I always thought the police had to let you go home and produce the license before they could legally site you for an offense. That has been awhile back and maybe things have changed, so I am not really sure.
  • fix it ticket show up to court with license in hand and ticket goes away
  • In Michigan it is against the law to drive without your license. Big fines called driver responsibility fees go along with the cost of the ticket too.
  • In my neck of the woods its an offense. I dont give a craps ass who you are, you dont have your licenses on you while driving a vehicle I gonna do everything in my power to make it difficult for you. Why? My feeling is this, you are suppose to be a responsible person behind the steering wheel, yet something as simple as grabbing your d/l and having it on you is to complicated for your mind to retain how the hell can you remember the rules of the road.............so yea I will make it difficult for a person.........its these very same people that expect our youth to follow all the rules yet as adults some are of the thinking "do as I say not as I do"
  • google driver v. travler
  • It is if they catch you, but usually if you can produce the license in court they will excuse the ticket.
  • Actually, the written law (which has been rearranged and rephrased over the years, without the intent of changing the meaning) prohibits "operating a motor vehicle" which means transporting persons or property for hire -- i.e. COMMERCIAL use of the roads: hauling freight as a business or carrying paying passengers as a business. But somewhere after 1925, the trucking companies and insurance companies, wanting to spread their costs, and municipalities, wanting to collect revenue, lobbied the legislatures to rephrase the statutes to make it appear that it applies to everybody. It is an extremely profitable scam and difficult to detect.
  • generally called "failure to present license"
  • yes, it is an offence... even if you dont have a licence yet like me (permitt) you still need to have that on you because you can actually be ticketed for failure to carry ID. I have beed ticketed for this once.... now i always have it on me.
