How did American Football come to be named? Was it a mistake, or a concious choice to use the "wrong" name?

It is probably because of the field goals, as kicking (with a "foot") field goals are a big part of the game, and everyone hinges on whether "It's good" or not. Also, to a touchdown, a good extra point field goal is like a cherry on top of a ice cream sundae.
