  • Like any hybrid car, the Toyota Prius has both a gas and electric engine. The gas engine charges the electric engine as is runs.
  • Something interesting to add to the last answer, The toyota prius has an innovative "regenerative Braking" system that stores the kinetic energy that is usually wasted in braking and stores it as electricity. Read more about it at the prius wikipedia article. Its really interesting stuff!
  • I drive a Prius and there is an energy monitor that shows you what the system is doing. It shows that when the car is operating on its gas engine, the battery is being charged. Similarly, whenever you coast or brake, the inertia of of the vehicle moving is used to generate energy to charge the batteries. This process constantly alternates while you're driving. This is a lot like the electric trains in Japan. When they brake, the wheels generate engergy and this is sent back into the grid.
