No, the www.answerbag.co.uk site is exactly the same database as the www.answerbag.com site. The IP addresses match and the map to the same physical application code.
They invented the English language and gave us Shakespeare and Dickens--great sources for AB questions.
This is strictly reserved for those who insist on spelling color as colour, and call the hood of the car the bonnet rather than the hood and other annoying little things like that.
ooooh... ermmm lets think?
England, ruled half the world, discovered and populated America... invented the TV the Phone, the Jet Engine...
I could go on for hours...

It doesn't have its own Answerbag. It's just a mirror site that contains exactly the same content as Answerbag.com. I'll ignore the last bit of your question.
Because like a good mother empire we have to keep a spying eye on our rebelling offspring ;)

You're reading Why does the UK have its own AnswerBag? (see the link at the bottom of the page) Other than the mousetrap and Keeley Hazell, what have they done to deserve the special distinction?

So what's the point? Honest, not malicious question : )

jst to get the co.uk? OK
by Someguy on December 18th, 2007
I think they do that just to get the domain name secured for possible future needs, yes. Or perhaps to make it feel more UK-centric to the UK users? Dunno. I would ask Joel, but he's out of town :)
by Stableboy on December 18th, 2007
Does it change the spelling of words like recognize to the formal "-ise"? It should.
by Someguy on December 18th, 2007
I just viewed your last comment on the co.uk site and it still says "recognize" ;)

Having a .co.uk site increases Answerbag's rankings on Google UK, so we get more British users here and hopefully more people to click on ads. That's what Joel told me ages ago, or maybe it was Jon.

i get that. Thanks. And when you see Keeley, thank her as well.

@Someguy: the site isn't going to dynamically respell content that's in the database, even if it knows you're in the UK -- that would be a very tricky bit of code. They COULD provide customization of the static content (fixed text on pages) or auto-generated content such as dates, etc., however that sort of adaptation isn't based on the URL, it's based on the "locale header" which is provided by the browser when requesting pages. If a site is designed with such pleasantries in mind, I can tell my computer that I'm in the U.K. locale, and go to the site, and be afforded the U.K. rendering of those bits.
by Stableboy on December 18th, 2007
we do that with some software here at work - it detects the location of the IP and changes the static content or the site-delivered content to reflect local language
i was just playing around.
by Someguy on December 18th, 2007
If you're detecting the IP to localize your site, you're going about it the hard (and slow) way! Just use the locale header, that's what it's for.
by Stableboy on December 18th, 2007
we work with fraud software, we get the IP location anyway and they decided to that call instead of another - it keeps the decisions consistant
by Someguy on December 18th, 2007
Ah, gotcha. Nevermind!
by Stableboy on December 18th, 2007
no problem - i like the suggestion - i had to ask one of the programmers why we did not use the header locale - he looked at me funny and asked me who i'd been talking to!
