It's just a thought, but if you are close enough to strike your opponent with your fist, your leg will also hit 'him'. A double whammy. Also, the leg is stronger, and as it is lower, it might tip your opponent towards your fist in reaction, making the blow stronger. Even if that is not so, a double attack makes it harder for your opponent to just dodge.

That would depend on a lot of things ... is there more than one attacker? What are the exact targets that you are punching & kicking? It could be that a low kick to the knee of the attacker's rear leg is the kick target ... it could be that you either kick to make your attacker fall into your punch, or it could be that you punch your attacker back into a better range for a higher kick ... it could also be that your punch is just your leg guard, if your attacker tries to block or trap your kick, you punch his hand/arm ... there are many reasons for double or triple simultaneous attacks.

The punch is there for two reasons. The kick should be to the solar plexus so that when you hit your opponant, they double over into your fist. Also, the next move is to grab their head, so your hand is already in the correct position.

Ask your instructor, its his job to help you understand.
