I have a tattoo on the back of my neck. Someone said it was dumb because no one can see it... but it isn't for show it is for a personal reason. Do you believe all tattoos are for show? Why or why not.

No, tattoos are typically gotten for personal reasons, I got all of mine because I wanted them. I got them in places that can be easily covered up so I can show them off when I want and not show them when it's not appropriate. Good question.

No way. My husband has a gagillion tattoos. All of them can be covered with a T-Shirt. I think they have more kick then... We've heard audible gasps from old ladies when he takes his shirt off at the water park. ^_^ I'm not sure if it's the giant glowing skull or the "EMBRACE THE HORROR" in big spidery letters that gets them most.

all of my tattoos are in places where i can hide them if i want to, they are for me... i don't mind if people see them, they are normally quite surprised when they realize i have tattoos. i just hate it when they are like, why'd you get THAT tattooed? normally referring to my pink skull & crossbones with a halo :) when presented with such situation i'm like, whats it to you? if they are actually worth it i'll tell them the story behind it but thats only for the special ones...

I do not believe all tats are for show. I have one on my stomach I have because I designed it for me and my sis, and believe me I don't show everyone my stomach. (No, it didn't stretch out when I was pregnant either) Tattoos are a personal permanent statement, whether you want to make that statement to everyone or yourself.

Not all tatts are "for show", in fact that's not the real reason to even get one. Half of mine show, others don't.

actually i have one tattoo and about to get another and both are hidden. These are also for personal reasons as my bf desdigned them before he passed away three years ago. Its your body and you can decide where you want your tattoos, so ignore the people who say its dumb love ya beka

You make their representation whatever you want them to be. Tattoos and any form of body modification are not taken in by every individual in society the same. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of American society find most forms of body modification, whether it is scarification or tattoos, as a taboo topic and a "no-no" but on a personal note, I find body modification something more personal because it is your skin, your body and someone else isn't carrying it around for you.

No, I personally don't. My tattoo is on my back as well, in between my shoulder blades. I didn't get mine for show. My tattoo is a bible vrse and I got it because it means something to me. However, some people do get tattoos just to show them off, and those are the kinds of people that will look at it when their 60, and say, "why did I do this?".

I want a tattoo. I've been thinking about if for years and I have always wanted it on my back, up near my shoulder. That way it only gets seen under specific circumstances: at the beach, when I'm wearing a tank top or backless dress.

They can be for show, if that's the reason and motivation behind getting it, but most of the tattoos people get are for very personal reasons, and are very personal pieces of them.

Tattoos have different meanings to each individual who owns it. I'm getting my first next month, it will be kanji lettering symbolizing happiness and I'm getting it inked between my shoulderblades. I want to be able to hide it in the work world but share it with my boyfriend and bare it in a tank top.

I think they are meant to be shown to whoever the person decides they want to see it. I have 3 tattoos and they are all on my back where I have to have a mirror to see them and it's difficult to show them to people, but I put them there for a reason.

SOme could be there for show but sometimes they are very personal and not for everyone to see. I don't have any tattoos but I'm into henna and I often do it in plces that people can't see, even the bottom's of my feet. Or maybe my breasts or other places. It's just for me and my husband, my little surprises and treasures.

Ogf course. Even if you are not conscious of the reasons for the outward expression, a tattoo is for show. Why is it there if not to make a statement. If it were not meant to be seen then why is it there? It conveys a message. To whom is the message?

I think they are a little of both. I have a small heart on the back of my neck. Nobody can see it unless I have my hair up, but it's my favorite. I just always wanted one and finally got it, it was just for me!

Tattoo's are for whatever you want them to be, it's your body and you can do whatever you please to it. So you don't want to show your tattoo, so what? But when someone does see that tattoo and they comment on it, do you say, "Oh, glad you like it.. blah blah" or do you say, "OMG you were not supposed to see that.. now I'll have to kill you... blah blah" Your tattoo isn't dumb regardless.. Tattoo's are cool! But look deep in your soul and ask it, Do you wanna see my tattoo? :)

When I got a tattoo, it was for a very personal and liberating reason. It wasn't mainly for show, and is in a location where it can be hidden when I don't want the world to see it. It's all about location.

I get told the same thing. I have a sun on the back of my neck and I put it there to remind me of a new chapter in my life. I intend to put my daughters footprint below it. I don't have to see it to know its there and draw strength from it. Other people can see it if they ask.

I have a tattoo on the back of my neck too - It's an "In Memory of" for my younger brother. I don't think all tattoos are for show I mean I have known girls to get a little Tweety bird with a lawn mower right by their pubic hair and I don't think they are showing that to everyone.

All non-survival things are done for personal reasons. That someone obviously feels tattoos are an art form and feels art should be displayed. It’s just a difference of opinion on a very unimportant matter. Besides it’s your tattoo and your body so it doesn’t matter what they think. However if you normally respect their opinion you might want to wait and give yourself time, you might change your mind.

Nope. All of mine will be on my torso. Each of them define me in some way. But then again, some people don't like tattoos no matter what the reason behind them is. Some just automatically look down on them.

I have two large tatoos which are well hidden (one is on my lower back) - got one waaaay before they fondly became known as "tramp stamps" and the other is below my belly button..and extends further down. Each has a significant meaning for me. Some of my friends that have them proudly display them but for me..they are my "dirty little secret" - In a good way..its a thrill for me too.. having tats and piercings all over my body and seeming "straight and narrow" - almost angelic when you meet me.. ha! So I say..to each his own..

tattoos to me are there to help you remember something. someone dying, a hard time in life, etc., you shouldn't get a tattoo just for other people to see, you should get a tattoo for yourself. whether you are going to see it or not.

I got both of my tattoos where I could cover them up if i wanted to. Every tattoo is a personal chioce, both design and placement.If you let someone else decide, your not getting tattooed for the right reason.

I have a tattoo of a dark green vine running from my neck to the wrist of my right hand to show my climb to success. I also have one of Japenese symbols on my higher back to represent my time of meditation in Japan. You should get them for a meaningful reason.

Nope, I'd never get a tatt for show! It has to mean something. There will always be some people who will get something done because it's fashionable. But they'll look the fool in 2 years time when fashion moves on and they can't. Like Mel C from the Spice Girls, stook in the 90's. There'll be others who will forever hate tattoos in all shapes and forms as they see it as vandalism of the body and not art with meaning - the same bunch of people will hate graffiti like Banksey's =/

Both my tattoos are well hidden; you would never actually tell that I have any until I show them to you. For me, each of them mean something private, and they are a reminder of great achievements/pain/triumph in my life. No one needs to know - but for those that choose to display them, then more power to you!they are always a great conversation starter.

There just jealous, thats awesome, I have Karma tatted on the back of my neck :D but you can see it if i put my hair up. I belive to show them off, because they represent who you are, an what you belive, but if your okay with just you seeing it, then theres nothing wrong with that.

I HAVE TWO TATTOOS, ONE ON MY BACK AND ONE ON THE INSIDE IF MY HIP. I WEAR CLOTHES THAT COVER MINE UP. PEOPLE ASK ME ALL THE TIME IF I HAVE ANY TATS AND I HAVE TO PULL MY SHIRTS OFF OR DOWN JUST SO THAT THEY CAN SEE THE ONE ON MY BACK. BUT I DID NOT GET THEM SO THAT I COULD SHOW THEM OFF. i have one on my thigh its a dragonfly. no ones going to see or know its there unless they know or i show them. or in a bathing suit, or short shorts. i feel that tattoos are a work of art, some better then others. but each one means something the person wearing it. like with my next two. ones going to be a baby dragon asleep with a teddy bear in its arms with my little brother's date of birth and date of death above and below it. then the other one is going to be another baby dragon, only it will be half hatched from its egg, and its to represent the miscarriages that i had have. both have a very special meaning to me. and i don't want random people coming up to me and asking what they mean, because both have very sad and painful memory's attached to them. they are for myself to know and for select people to know what they mean.

I'm going to be getting on running from the middle of my back and cascading onto my left shoulder blade. I won't be able to see it but it has a special meaning to me. The center piece is going to be a broken star, to signify myself. I think that you should only get one if it means something to you. My boyfriend has two, one is a tribal lion's head on the back of his leg and the other is a cross on his right forearm. Again, he only got them because they mean something to him. But I guess to answer your question, I don't think all tattoos are for show. Some may be for personal reasons, such as a way to always remember someone, or you may simply into decorating your body.

I actually think the only reason to get a tat is for personal reasons, I actually have a good bit of tat work and none of mine is visible unless I take my shirt and pants off. All of my tats have a meaning to me, were designed by me and are for me alone. I could care less if anyone else saw them. I think people that get tats for the sake of showing them off are trend whores. Usually those people are the same ones that pick flash tats that are stupid and unoriginal anyways and who wants to see another calvin and hobbes, pearl jam, or other "billboard" piece or tramp stamp anyways?

Tattoos are for show if you WANT them to be. I'm about 75% covered with tattoos but my arms are usually the only ones that are seen. I got my first ones on my arms so that I could see them, then started moving around on my body. The best reason to get a tattoo is because YOU WANT IT. Whoever made that comment doesn't know what they're talking about. That's like saying that if a woman gets breast implants she should walk around topless so everyone can see them!

I think all tattoos should be personal, no matter where they are - I know people that get them in places no one but them, the tattoo artist, and their lovers will see, but as long as you know it's there and you wanted it and it was meaningful, I think that's great! If it's for show, then it's for show, but they're always (or, I think, should always be) personal.

Of course all are not for show.i have 6 tattoos. all of them can be hidden with clothing/my hair. I have one on my neck of my mothers initals. I wanted to honor her as she passed away. However, i didnt always want to have to explain to people that its a tattoo for my mother who is now dead. get it? Some things you just dont want to talk about everyday.

Everybody has a different reason for being tattooed and it's NOBODY'S business to tell you if what you get on your body should be visible only to you or to others too. I got a tattoo on my ankle because I WANT it to be visible at times and invisible at others.

Not neccessarly, I have some tats in places that only meant for me and my m husband to see. Plus we all have to remember that we might have work and getting tattoos in place were we dont have a choice in showing could keep you from getting a job.

Personally, I think tattoos are a personal thing. The tattoos I'll be getting are in fairly hidden places (lower back, rib cage), not places I flaunt, really. I understand how people could have tattoos for show, but that depends on the person.
