Question

Help answer this question below.

During an argument on AB, would you try to intimidate your opponent and/or outright end the discussion by pointing out that your level is higher than theirs? (i.e. "I'm at level 1,020,359 and you're at 7, so I'm better than you." Or whatever.)

I can't see that as being very intimidating. Who cares what level an idiot is at? If they are an idiot, they are an idiot. High rank just makes them a high ranking idiot.

No, and in over a year of active participation, I've never seen anybody else do that either. Anybody who tried that would immediately be baked and flailed in the comment threads! :)

- Well I think his comment about levels is another attempt at humor, from the context. Overall he seems uninterested in getting along with others, and more interested in demonstrating cleverness. That's not uncommon here... although most people who have it get it out of their system before level 42 1/2! :)

- Call me oversensitive, but it just kinda struck me as more along the lines of 'I so far outrank you that your opinions are meaningless'. Which I guess shows us that we need to be careful how we word things, 'cause you can't see facial expressions or hear tone of voice through a PC screen.

- LOL. Yeah, that's a rather lame argument if taken seriously. Last year (when levels were first introduced) I became curious about how they were affecting the social interactions on AB, so I created a separate account and spent a whole day talking to people incognito -- from level 1 instead of my then-lofty level 45! :) It was an interesting experiment. The first time I felt the need to scold someone (for gay bashing), I wished I had that badge backing me up... apparently I DO think it means something, yes? But I didn't see that until I was in the situation.

I once got accused of this, and I was just stating that I am good at defending myself... and the other person should learn to back down.

no, I would never do that because it's really juvenile. and, it really doesn't matter what your level is...it doesn't make anyone "better" than someone else.

I've never seen that happen with the levels.

What I have seen, though, is people using the fact that they've been around 2 years vs. others having been around a few months. (Like the newer person couldn't *possibly* have a valid opinion or observation.) That's also really juvenile.

Do you know what having a high level means? It means that the people who have them have spent a lot of time on the site. It has nothing whatever to do with their ability - it's more a measure of quantity than quality.

Good lord no!

I don't usually GET into arguments on AB, but on the couple of occasions I did, I followed the "social rules" for courteous argument. Ultimately we could not agree, so I suggested "agreeing to disagree" and having no hard feelings. My "opponent" thought that was fine.

May you please make it so from levels 1-5, the time given to edit your question is 5 minutes & then 1 more minute for every level after? (Thus, a level 28 would have 28 minutes to edit the question.) Higher level = higher rank = more trust so why not?
