Like any insurance provider, policies can vary company to company. We used TravelGuard and they do cover medical emergencies. Their website at www.travelguard.com even lists one of the emergencies that is covered as "you're on vacation and your sister-in-law becomes ill and you need to cancel your trip". They will cover non-refundable deposits and pre-payments and possibly other losses. As with anything you purchase, check around before going with one provider. You never know what can happen to ruin a thoughtfully planned vacation.
