I think because they had no choice but to do so. But that surrender has resulted in the collapse of the German economy because of the heavy war payments. That led to the rise of Hitler to power. The rest is history.

The American army made a major difference and changed the stalemate caused by balanced, and tired, forces. A number of Allied victories where the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) made the victory possible, including the Battle of the Argonne Forest, showed Germany that the tide had turned against them. The surrender of Austria-Hungary and the subsequent mutiny by the German navy led to the overthrow of Kaiser Wilhelm. The government that took over agreed to the armistice.
