When the founding member happens to be a science fiction writer who once described religion as a sure-fire money maker, it's hard to look any further.

Because those people are educated and know what Scientology really is. It's a little bit difficult to accept a "religion" based on the belief that everyone has aliens in their soul. That, and infiltrating the IRS to purge unfavorable documents is more than a little worrisome. (Don't believe me? Google "Operation Snow White.")

In addition, Scientology is considered a personally dangerous cult (and is, in my opinion) and on top of that, Tom Cruise is probably a public relations professional's worst nightmare.

Because the practice and belief in the teachings of Scientology has been historically intertwined with the insane, and in many cases criminal, activities of the Church of Scientology and some of its members, and it is foreign to most people.

If you had never heard of Catholics other than of the Priests who molest children, than you too would have difficulty accepting someone who presented themselves as Catholic.

Because they don't understand what Scientology is, would be my guess. There's been an abundance of negative press concerning Scientology over the years.

People tend to accept what they know, and reject that which is foreign to them. It's a narrow way of thinking, but it's comfortable.

There are a number of reasons for this. One of the reasons is that people don't know a lot about what Scientologists truly believe. Some of them have seen the South Park episode and base their entire understanding of Scientology on that even though it described a very small part of Scn beliefs without the theory of what's behind them.
    ______________________________________________________
Another reason: The church of Scientology has been linked to a lot of extremely abusive and problematic practices and deeds. A lot of ex members- including myself- have been speaking out about them. As the internet came into common usage, around the 90's, say, where more and more people were getting connected to the internet, more discussion groups with more critics and more ex members were extant.
    ______________________________________________________

The Incident II story (OTIII) has been on the web for over ten years now. It freaks a lot of people out.
    ______________________________________________________

The whistleblowing on the doings of the church are only going to increase. Some extremely high profile senior management staff have "blown" and are talking. People are writing books, too. The church had always managed to quash books before (and that fact alone upsets people since no other modern church other than, say, some of the Islamic ones, goes after publishers like CofS does) but I don't think it can much longer.
    ______________________________________________________

Please believe me when I tell you I'm not trying to belittle your beliefs or your feelings for the organization. I was in the church for years before I finally got really fed up and left. I still practice Scientology on an independent basis (according to the church I can't do that. But then again I don't take orders from them.) and I understand why a person would be a Scientology and I understand the ideas and practices to be found in Scientology "Tech". But there truly are problems with the organization. Plus, if I may say so, even if there weren't any problems at all- which there certainly are- every group and every philosophy always has some detractors. In Scientology's case, many of the detractors are people who were hurt by the church or knew people who were hurt by the church.

Misinformation. People have a hard time accepting what they don't understand. Unfortunatly, if you mention Scientolgy, many will mently jump to Tom Cruise hopping on Oprah's couch.

Because most people don't know much about it therefore
it must not be good and what little they have heard is very strange to them.

It probably figure that if they collapse and are dying the most help you'll give is to pray for them. I don't mean this in a negative way, really but that is the stereotype.

Because CofS (Church of Scn) has an extremely bad reputation- mostly deserved. That's the main reason. There are a LOT of abuses in CofS. However, I will say this- before a lot of the abuses became public, there were always people who were intolerant of people who were Scientologists because some people just plain ARE intolerant. But nowadays, I really believe it's mainly an issue of the really really bad press CofS has garnered and the problems and abuses behind it.
