    I'll put it this way:
It's like person (A) is an atheist,
And person (C) is a christian,
Person (A) and person (C) are walking down the road. Person (C) keeps putting up hurdles in person (A) way and person (A) has to keep dodging and jumping them. After a while person (A) gets tired of person (C) doing that and wants person (C) to stop. As soon as person (A) complains about person (C) then he (A) is called militant and evil. Then person (C) cries and says that person (A) is taking all his rights away...
and all person (A) wanted to do was walk down the road!

I think I would actually disagree. Considering "we" atheists are trying to get rid of 'One Nation Under God', Christmas (or any other holiday name), praying at the beginning of sports games, etc. I really think that neither side is REALLY accepting of the other (with the exception of the rest of us in the "middle" and aren't extremists about it)- but since atheists don't really have any specific beliefs to "take away"... It's looking like atheists are less tolerant, really. (Though in reality it's probably more like 50/50.)

I love the shocked silence when one states they are an Atheist. Folks won't meet your eyes and seem to be waiting for a bolt of lightening to hit.

Disagree. I'm an atheist, most of the people I know that are Christian know that forcing conversion is immoral, and we all get along because of the common denominator that life is already too fucking hard without us at each other's throats. When I have a religious or theological question I ask and they answer, and when they have a secular or eastern-mysticism question, I answer.

It's called respect for your fellow man.

    Agree.
Because most athiests are A LOT more open minded,
And most religious people, not all, only believe in their religion to be the right.
Since athiests aren't religious, that doesn't really apply to them.
The point is that they just tend to be more open minded and could care less what religion you are.

    I'm open to any religion : )

Ender is back.. And slightly confused.

If by "Accept" you mean "Are tolerant of", I think both sides have their fanatics and both sides have people who are reasonable and can understand that reality is entirely subjective and that each individual has a right to his or her point of view, and that absolutely nothing is certain.

I also disagree. I think there are just as many atheists who can't stand Christians as there are Christians who can't stand atheists.

I am a roleplayer, though, and that particular demographic has been so poorly treated by Christians that the atheists I come in contact with are quite justifiably militant. So that may skew my perception somewhat.

Disagree--I've never met an atheist who didn't try to talk me out of my beliefs or at least lose some respect for me when they found out I was religious.

It's hard to say. I'm tempted to agree, but literally the only atheist I know personally is myself. And I've always suspected that Christians aren't nearly as bad as they seem, and that a very vocal minority is just giving the whole shebang a bad name. So it's difficult to generalize.

I'm not sure I'm in a position to say. I know christians who leap upon me as an immoral, hellbound threat to their pre-pubescent children, and others who'll engage in really thoughtful debate.
I must admit I react with immediate intolerance of the first group but enjoy hanging out with the second group...
I don't meet many atheists who are as 'radical' as the radical christians though.

I disagree. I think the atheists are just as intolerant if not moreso of Christians right to believe in a higher power than there are christians hell bent on forcing athiests to accept the existence of God.

Both groups are equal offenders. Atheists might even be worse, because a lot of them try to deny their intolerance.

it's honestly kinda fuzzy. when it comes to atheists, you've got the ones that thought it through and are rather tolerant of other people's beliefs. then there are the ones who became atheists because they thought it was cool, that theism sucked, or other such ignorant thoughts. as for theists, they aren't getting off the hook too easy. there are ones who questioned faith, or at the very least actually thought it through, and are generally more tolerant of others beliefs. then there are the ones following the religion in "bad faith", which is were they blindly follow it like fascism. and to finish this off, "Bible-thumpers". these are really annoying people. sometimes they thought their religion through and sometimes they are blindly following. but what makes this group so annoying is the COMPLETE lack of tolerance of others ideals and beliefs, they seem to believe that their belief is the only one and anyone else is a ignorant heathen who must be converted to save their soul, or something like that. to simply answer this question: mostly neutral with a slight inclination towards agreeing.

if you are an atheist or a christian, that is you exercising your free will.

my husband doesn't observe christmas and will not attend the company holiday party this year. atheists will attend without a problem. so many people have given my husband grief for not attending for the past years that he just tells them "what do you care? i get docked for the four hours and the company saves the money of one meal". it's amazing how he gets grilled for not attending a party.

I agree, most atheists still say "merry Christmas" or "bless you", both are religious, but no religious person says "happy holidays" (in my experience)
But this is a touchy subject and these holidays are more tradition now than religious.

I think that in general Christians are not too accepting of Atheists. But it is just a conflict of belief. This is not a conflict of who believes what; this is a problem with the way people in general are taught to defend their beliefs. But I think that in the world today, some Atheists are bitter towards Christians because Christians push them away.

The world in general needs to learn how to stick by their own beliefs while accepting the fact that belief is something inside a person that they can't control; it is in our soul and in our head. We can change it, but the underlying principle is like those of feelings. We can't control our feelings; they're just there. I believe that beliefs are the same way. They are just implanted in our Soul-DNA.

We as a general population of just plain people need to believe what we believe and let others do the same.

It has been my experience, generally speaking, that *most* athiests treat Christians' beliefs with contempt while *most* Christians try and convert athiests. There is no semblance of mutual tolerance, acceptance or respect for each others' beliefs, or lack of. Remember..I said generally speaking, I am by no means saying that all athiests or Christians fit this description.

Agree, most of us 'religious' people are taught that atheism is wrong, whereas most 'atheists' are merely taught that religion is ignorant, not as bad as being flat out wrong.

How many religious people here had a couple of atheists knock at your door early in the morning when you're still sleeping to try to convince you to apostate your religion or face eternal torture?

I've seen intolerance from both sides at AB and I haven't even tried to do a statistical analysis of what percentage of the atheists here have expressed intolerance of Christian beliefs compared to the converse of that.

agree. it's in the christian's belief to tell others of their wrong doing. and they must agree to this that it is wrong in order to want to spread that particular word. and well i think athiest's are very open. they aren't out there telling you in your face that god doesn't exist like some idiots telling you you have to believe in god to escape hell and that god will love you in return.

    I tend to agree.

I do not however think this is because of any inherent 'superiority' of atheists over theists.

It is more a matter of numbers. When you are many it becomes easy (and tempting) to be intolerant of the few.

Atheist are neither more nor less likely to succumb to that temptation than theists are. they are just fewer, so they do not have it as strongly.
