  • yes they can
  • If they flat out lied for some reason, yes. If they were given bad info, and they reported it, then they can make a correction. They wouldn't necessarily be liable if they had no reason to doubt the credibility of the source. If they believed it to be true and reported it in good faith, the suit wouldn't go very far.
  • Yes they can, but they tend to be very careful in their use of words for this very reason. For example, there's a huge difference between saying something happened and saying something is ALLEGED to have happened.
