Darwinian evolution (a theory that explains the diversity of life on earth) has taken place over geologic time -- also known as 'deep time'. The theory of geology holds that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old and that over 10s or 100s of millions of years (mind-boggling lengths of time) events take place that re-shape the planet, including mountain formation and destruction, ocean becoming land or vice-versa, etc. Creationism holds that all species sprang into existence simultaneously according to biblical Genesis. However there is a tradition among Christian fundamentalists that the earth is only 6000-10,000 years old (depending on the 'authority'), largely based on counting generations since Adam & Eve. Since evolution requires deep time, most fundamentalists reject not only biology but geology as well. They claim that the age of the earth is only about one-millionth the scientifically agreed-upon value. This is like comparing the width of a human hair to the length of a football field. 'Young earth' is an understatement indeed!

They are people who listen to, and believe, others who reject the conclusions humans have reached by studying the world around them. Young-Earth Creationists are also big on literalist belief from the book of their choice (frequently the Bible.) They are usually anti-evolution and believe that science (or at least science other than their own) just makes things up. By the way, some evolutionary speculations are also hogwash. (Knowledgible students of Evolution already know that.)

Usually they are sincere christians (other religions like islam have them too - but the term usually applies to the christian variety). They are led astray by, I believe, a bunch of cynical, power-hungry, money-making folk who have no hesitation in grossly misrepresenting facts, omitting anything they don't like, bending the truth like a pretzel or just lying altogether in order to sell heaps of books and play the age old game of "I'm a Powerful Religious Figure With a Really Small Penis so Believe Me Or Go To Hell...".

They are Christians who believe that the earth is "young" because it is only a few thousand years old because God created that long ago. They indentify with the Intelligent Design theory or Creationism theory rather than the theory of Evolution (I would give myself points if I could for doing a rare thing on this site: answering the question without ranting, complaining, or badmouthing.)
