  • I couldn't find a good answer anywhere but what I do know is -- ink cartridges are not cheap. Even if you did it effectively with a company that specailizes in all this, full color is not cheap. With words, it's much less ink and far less cost. With just pictures, you're using far more ink and far more resources.
  • Type is so much easier to produce. Think about it. You pick the size and style of the font and layout for the page. Most pages will be primarily the same. When dealing with artwork, you have to plan every page, because each page will be significantly different. You are dealing with an author who has strong ideas of how the book should be produced. Colors that have to be chosen from hundreds of choices. There is much more production involved. That all takes time and expertise. Which makes a picture book more complicated and expensive to produce.
