Hmmmm...If car starts with key, doesnt that mean ignition switch works, but car shuts off when you remove foot from gas.
Been told we need new distributor and/cap to the tune of $300+ Does that sound like it could be the problem? Some of us female folks are very easily taken advantage of by dishonest mechanics :( Answer 3 out of 3 by csimme01 and Ninja Cooper UNMASKED on Dec 30, 2007 at 1:37 pm Permalink

Yes. If the sensor tells the car that it is 70 degrees when it is really 30 degrees the car will not use enough fuel on a cold start for it to keep running. The system will give a big squirt of fuel on first crank so will start, but then die. If you keep you foot on the gas it will probably keep running and if you let it warm up a few minutes it may keep running. If that is what happens it is a very good chance the ECT sensor is the problem. Looks like the part is 30 or 40 bucks.
thanks, will check into it.... is there a sensor right in the distributor itself? That's what I was told when they said I needed a new distributor, because a sensor in it was shot...
Yes there is , but if that sensor was shot it wouldn't start at all.
