Why, when spelling our names or other words, do we assign male names to letters? For example P as in Peter... C as in Charlie?

    They are not all male names. There are monthe (November) and other things.

    The phonetic alphabet is really handy when giving reference numbers over the phone, or customers names. this makes sure when booking important documents (like air tickects... which cost money to change) that the names are correct. this is also used in military and other services too

    Dunno why someone downrated this by three....

    Anyway, it originated from the military. They spell things using "alpha", "bravo", "Charlie", "delta", "echo", "foxtrot", "golf", "hotel", etc.

    The requirements of the system were to have words that could be pronounced and comprehended easily by native and non-native English speakers alike. It so happens that there are a couple of female names, like the one for J ("Juliette").
