When you go to a restaurant don't you hate it when there are a bunch of empty tables and the hostess sits you right next to other people, instead of seating you farther away, and having your own space?

The hostess does not choose where you sit; she follows a strict seating schedule according to the server's stations. When I used to hostess, I would hate it when the party I was trying to seat wanted to switch tables, thus switching waitress (or waiter) stations-the servers then proceeded to get upset with me when I couldn't help it!

I don't like people being all bunched together and I have only had that done on rare occasions. I think usually they spread people around when they have enough servers to take care of separate areas and when they don't they place them all together so it is convenient for the server to keep on eye on them all.

Yes, and when that happens, I usually ask for a different table.
