I have a 6 yr old maine coone with bad urinary tract health. He has struvite crystals. making his urine very grainy. He strains and strains and only trickles eventually when his bladder is full he leaks all over himself. Brought him to vet twice in past two weeks. He was cathetirized for 2 days then 3 days still has same problem. I was feeding him crap...9 lives tender cuts(very high carbs and made from crap) and free fed Meow mix and kit n kaboodle. I had another male 15 yrs ago fed him same crap and he developed diabetes at 7 yrs old. I have done extensive research and regardless whjat happen to my cat now...My future pets will all start off as kittens with no dry food(dehydrates them regardless how much water they drink from bowl or fountain. ) Just fee Evo chicken,. duck and venison(beef has too much phosphates-bad for kidneys. Maybe some Dick Van Patten Ultra or wellness no grain. As for my present cat....He won't touch the stuff he is spoiled. Mixing doesnt work either. I tried Pro plan low Ph urinary tract health chicken. He loves it and all though it isnt made of the best stuff it is low in Magnesium and ash. Once his Ph levels are normal I will try to mix in Evo ...I hope it works or he is gonna have to become a girl...see PU surgey for cats! Basically male Urethras are extremely tiny and get crystals plugs in them. It is a disaster for them. The surgey uses the large internal urethra direcly to area between scrotum and anus to make them urinate easliy...Very Expensive. Buying cheap cat food is truly penny wise dollar foolish unless you don't give a crap about the pain a cat goes through or the smell in your house. Those crappy supermarket commercial foods should all be put out of business.

I have found that every cat food that specifically states that it is made to aid in urinary health, seems to have bad ingredients. While they offer low magnesium and low ash, I wonder if it is helping overall.
I just read an article about the best way to treat this problem, is to feed a good quality canned food that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates, which makes sense, because when my cat developed the struvite crystals, is was due to too many carbohydrates (the dry food had too much corn, wheat, etc.)_ I have found innova evo 95% beef to be high in protein, low carbs, low magnesium, and low ash. This is what I am going to feed mine. Purina Pro Plan was the last one I tried. Don’t be fooled into thinking that "prescription/low magnesium" diets are the solution, nor are they healthy. High protein/low carbohydrate/grain free foods are the optimum diet for dogs and cats with or without crystals, for both prevention of, and recovery from, crystals.

Urinary PH levels are optimized by avoiding grains, therefore preventing the risk of alkaline/magnesium reactions.
Grain-free/low carb diets also support healthy kidney function, amongst the many other health benefits of feeding a high protein diet to your pet. (Innova Evo canned cat food 95% beef is the best I've found. They have a dry formula as well. Highest protein lowest carbs on the market. petfooddirect sells it as well as some area pet stores. Hope this helps! It's been a long hard road for me and my cat.
