  • Ran out of space above, but the point is well noted in this reference from Wikipedia: People have asserted the right in grand jury or in congressional hearings in the 1950s, where witnesses testifying before the House Committee on Un-American Activities or the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee claimed the right in response to questions concerning their alleged membership in the Communist Party. However, due to the Red Scare hysteria of the times, frequently referred to as McCarthyism, people who have asserted the right were popularly seen as guilty as accused, and sometimes referred to as "Fifth Amendment Communists"; people have lost their jobs, lost their leadership positions in union or political organizations, or had other negative repercussions after "taking the fifth."
  • Whether Barry Bonds is guilty of anything is an afterthought at this point. Bonds was, in my opinion, indicted because of public outcry to see him indicted. People said he used steroids, so therefore he must have. Lack of evidence other than hearsay seems to be immaterial now. As I've said before, I'm betting there will be no conviction on anything with Bonds, and he'll still be villified in the media and by baseball in general. Too many people just WANT to believe he's guilty, whether it can be proved or not.
  • I believe he is charged with perjury or something like that. In any event he is rich so therefore he will walk.
