It depends on how less expensive you are talking about. They are much better quality than a $10 watch you pick up off a market, but if you're talking aboud brands that are a few hundred, or thousand dollars, then you certainly pay more for the Rolex name. They are very good watches, but the status symbol element of them is probably their biggest selling factor.

it's not so much a matter of functionality as it is quality. A toyota and a lamborghini both get you where you are going but one costs significantly more than the other. Rolex's and other luxery watches might not tell time any better or worse than a 30 dollar watch but it's what they are made of, and the durability of them. Hand made innards, the number of jewels inside that reduce gear friction, the material of the lens, and of course branding all play a part in the Rolex name and price which are synonymous with quality and luxury.

I guess it comes down to the person, I can justify the price of one for the quality, but other people might say a 20 dollar seiko is just as good.

If by quality you mean timekeeping, then I would wager to say not. There are wrist watches that are 60 $ or so that keep perfect time because they are updated via radio braodcasts from a W-W-V, station.
However of it is quality over the near perfect time keeping, then Rolex, Heuer, and other such names will take the 60 $ watch in a heart beat. They are made with great precision, and are intended to last a very long time. I would also think that the materials used would be of higher quality.
But when it comes to the watches that all cost more than two or three hundred dollars, my vote is that they are all very close in quality.

It's for attention and brand and nothing more.

The quality BETTER be better.....look at how much more you pay. I have a $50 watch that works great in and out of water and I might have to re-set the time every year or two. Would spending 100 times that amount get me a better watch? Yes, but is it worth the 100X price increase? Of course not.

Not to mention, with everyone carrying ipods & cell phones, who really needs a watch these days? It's jewelry at this point.

One thing about fine Swiss watches is that name brand is considered a component of quality.

I know that sounds silly, and maybe it is silly.

But if you're selling a used Rolex and another used watch and that other watch is obviously better than the Rolex, you'll probably get more money for that Rolex just because of the name.

Paying a lot for a luxury Swiss watch seems extravagant, but there is a strong resale market for those. They will retain their value much better than most products.
