From the novel Fahrenheit 451, why does Beatty act so foolishly when he knows Montag is armed?

    Likely because Beatty was tired of being a Fire Chief, let alone a Fireman.

    Beatty was a very well-read man, more than he should have been for a Fireman who was allowed to read the occasional book as part of his professional training or to scratch that itch that all Firemen get. I think that the idea here was to set up a scene where Beatty would be found to have a vast collection of his own.

    Maybe he was finally tired of the hypocracy of his life and Montag was just the ticket out.
