A gopher and a rat are much futher apart than two separate species, they are in different sub orders. Gophers are in the sub order Geomyoidea. Rats are in the sub order Muriodea. for more information see http://tolweb.org/Rodentia/15959

Gophers don't carry diseases like rats do. They aren't nocternal like rats. The live in holes they burrow in the ground, not sewers like rats. They live in family groups, and watch out for one another. They are typicaly herbavours. Rats are disgusting little bastards, gophers are just an inconvience to farmers and golf course greenskeepers.
