http://www.buffalonian.com/trivia/buffaloname.html The name "Buffalo Creek" predates the establishment of the Village. All the published literature I have seen states that the Seneca Nation had a big meeting there in 1780. Maybe the name stuck... Here is a quote of the usage: "William Johnston had settled on Buffalo Creek, possibly in the Indian village at first, soon after 1780. Certainly this much may be accorded Johnston: that he had been familiar with the vicinity of Buffalo for a longer period than had the several other "first settlers," up to the time of his death."

The City of Buffalo received its name from the creek that flows through it, and likely dates from the mid-18th century, when the area was first settled by Europeans.

The City of Buffalo is almost certainly named for the Buffalo River. It began at the point the river flows into Lake Erie. It is very unclear just how the river got the name.

I had heard that buffalo refered to the action of flowing, such as 'flowing water'. And that it was later applied to the American Bison due to the endless movement of them in a large group across the land.

Probably because you would have to be wearing a buffalo hide to stay there for very long. Cold, cold place as I understand it.

I don't know.I'm still wondering how "Hell",Michigan got it's name.

The American buffalo which is in no way related to the water buffalos of india is actually a bison. They migrated back and forth from canada as the seasons changed. Because they could cross the Niagara river at that area it became known as "Buffalo".
