Help answer this question below.
If you miss the ship while in a port, you will need to obtain other transportation to the next port of call, at your own expense. The best way to avoid this while on a cruise, other than never leaving the ship, is to take an excursion offered by the cruise line rather than going off on a privately offered excursion. If you are on an excursion offered by the cruise line and the tour is late returning to port, they will contact the ship and the ship will wait for you.
If you miss getting back to the ship after it leaves port you are responsible for getting yourself to the next port of call, or back home.. but you forfit the rest of your cruise (and you may or may not receive your items you left onboard.. one would think you would but...)
The rule is to be back on the ship at least 1/2 to 45min prior to sailing (required by the cruise line). I would say that taking the shore excursions offered by the cruise line is the best way to make sure you "don't miss the boat", but if you want to go on your own, make your plan to be back at least 2 hours prior to sailing to give you some time to get there.
HOWEVER, if you are not on a shore excursion offered by the line, and you KNOW you're going to be missing the boat, you can get a small boat to take you out to the ship, provided it is not too far away.
I have seen ppl get choppered out, and also fly to the next port and meet the ship, having missed all the dinners and evening's festivities.
It will cost you.
