Wallace "Bud" Smith won the Lightweight Championship of the World when he decisioned Jimmy Carter on June 29, 1955. He then defended his title against Carter on October 19, 1955, winning another 15 round decision.

He then lost the remaining 11 bouts of his career, and was stopped in 6 of them.
