Question

Help answer this question below.

I am 70 years old and fell down a week ago on my knees. One of them still hurts. I put ice on it for a few days until the swelling went down but do not know what else to do. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Where exactly is the pain?

On the knee/on the knee cap?

Behind the knee (where the ligaments run).

Or inside the knee. If inside (like behind the knee cap) is it the left side or the right side? Does the knee "click" when you move it - did it lock up?

All of these questions and a quick exam would determine if you did damage to the meniscus, ligaments or muscle tear. Muscles and ligaments require time, cold then heat. The cold to reduce swelling, the heat to make if feel good. if swelling id not present then use heat.

The Meniscus once torn past mid-20's will require surgery to shape and remove the torn part. After around 28 it no longer heals.

The knee although a simple hinge joint is a fairly complex joint and the most prone to injuries, there are several that can take place and each require their own diagnoses and then treatment.

Perhaps this: http://www.physsportsmed.com/issues/1999/10_01_99/laprade.htm may help you figure out what could be wrong.
