Yes of course the story of creation in the Qur'an is the same as the bible. Muslims believe in the God of Abraham, they are descended from Ishmael son of Hagar, his wife Sarah's, maid servant.
-
I've no doubt of it. "Modern Science" changes every year. The Bible, the Koran and other religious texts do not. They are bound to run into some conflicts.
-
Yes, it is the same across them all. Now, many fundamentalist believers of the religions will tell you that there are no contradictions with science, but the Qur'an has the sun setting in a muddy spring at the edge of the earth and sperm produced in the abdomen. The Bible classifies bats as birds, has the Sun created after the plants that require it for photosythesis, etc. The same is true for many religious texts. The two it matters for the most are the Bible (including the Torah) and the Qur'an, as these texts are claimed to be the revealed word of the one and only, all-powerful, all-knowing Deity. Scientific inaccuracies, therefore, are a direct contradiction to the claim of being the revealed word of such a deity.
-
Sorry Antigone rising, but you are incorrect. The word used in the passage on birds/bats you refer to, is the Hebrew word 'owph. This word, rendered 'birds' in the OT, means simply "owner of a wing", which comes from a root word which means to cover or to fly. The category of 'owph includes birds, bats, and certain insects. So, the Bible does NOT call bats as birds, but rather as simply a creature having wings. As to the creation of plants before the Sun, this is a non-issue unless you believe the photosynthetic process is a product of evolution, rather than creation. Additionally, the original question in this thread is, I believe, fundamentally flawed. There is not one single supposed "contradiction" with science in the Bible that cannot be thoroughly refuted/explained upon further study. But if you say the Bible is "full of contradictions" long enough and hard enough, people tend to accept it as fact. This is not the case with the Qur'an. It's scientific inaccuracies are well documented, and have yet to be explained by Muslim scholars. Again, there is not one supposed Bible contradiction that cannot be adequately refuted. Ultimately however, this all comes down to personal choice. If you choose to believe the Bible contradicts science even when your examples are shown to be non-issues, you have the right to do so. Faith, or the lack thereof, is a personal matter.

It's not just modern science that some statements from the Bible run into conflict with. Having spent 8yrs in Catholic schooling, we enjoyed finding parts of the old testament that had just become completely ridiculous. This West Wing clip (which probably everyone has seen by now) does a pretty good job of pointing out some passages which have become a little uh.....dated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHaVUjjH3EI
-
The Vedas, the Upanishads, the various myths, the Ramayana, the Bagavat Gita, The Quran, the Tao Tey Ching, and probably every religious work in history make statements that, if interpreted INCORRECTLY (like say by insisting on a literal meaning of what was clearly intended to be figurative or an analogy) will contradict known scientific and historical facts, other statements made in the work, and common sense. The Bible is no exception. Niether is a scientific journal or news report. The Quran and myriad cultic/heretical writings (like the book of Mormon, or the Scoffield Bible) make statements that when interpreted correctly, as the author intended (and indeed leaves no other choice) contradict science, history, reason, and/or other statements made in the work. The Bible is not among these. Contrary to popular misconceptions, the Bible (properly understood) at no time makes any statement that is contrary to known scientific or historical facts. (An account of a miracle/divine intervention does not contradict science: it could only contradict science if the author presented the miracle as a natural phenomenon, not a supernatural one: e.g., there is nothing scientifically impossible about GOD raising a man from the dead. After all, if He is God, He ought to be able to do that.) There is only one known inescapeable internal contradiction in the Bible: two different passages disagree about a king's age when he became king. That's it. By the way, the clip from the Westwing is trash - theologically at least, though good theater. Of course, it doesn't suggest that Biblical passages contradict known scientific facts, just that the ancient application of some precepts are currently "passe" (the author merely assumes that modern society is right to disregard them; he never shows that that's correct though.) But it's big problem is complete disregard of context - at least in it's attempt to argue that the passage about homosexuality being an abomination is of the exact same order as those passages about selling ones daughter as a concubine or eating pork. They're not. They come from radically different sections of the Torah. The one against homosexuality is part and parcel with the condemnations for murder, rape, perjury, larceny, and the like.

There is a very good book called the Bible, The Quran and Science by Dr. Maurice Bucaille of France. A video version of the book in reference to the Quran is called the Book of Signs which deals with the issue of Modern Science/ancient Science, Facts and theories and the Quranic texts in relation to them. It is a very good reading and very good watching! There are other lectures on the topic that you can google or some other search in the muslim communities. There are many Quranic text that challenged scientific views at its time and agree with modern scientific views. One example is the Quran stating that God appointed the sense of hearing, sight and then speech in that order which is indication to an unborn childs ability to hear from the mothers womb before he/she can see and of course speech is the last step of the 3 after birth. Another example is the Quran's detailed description of the development of the embryo from the point of Sperm to actual human form. The references in the Quran to finger tips refer to the science of fingerprint identificaion. The Quran did not state the Moses parted the Red Sea which is considered to be a bad translation(from sea of reeds) but rather the Quran refers to it as the sea. http://www.answering-christianity.com/pharaohs_body_preserved_and_found_as_quran_prophesied.wmv http://www.answering-christianity.com/quran/ma_drowned.htm An open mind and a humble heart is all you need to benefit from it.

If you believe that the Bible is literally true, then you have to believe that the World is Flat. The same applies to the Koran. I have also read the Hindu Scriptures "Rig Veda" and "Vishnu Purana" and they also make reference to a Flat Earth. The ideas of Modern Science may change and develop, but new theories always build upon older ones. Newton built upon Aristotle and Einstein built upon Newton.

Old Testament: Global flood. Earth created in 1 day. Adam and Eve didn't have parents. . Koran: Mohamed spoke to god. He ascended into heaven, physically, on a pink horse. . In short - yes. . +5

There is an intresting story in the Koran which completely contradicts modern science. According to the Koran, in the year AD617, Mohammed split the moon in two and then rejoined the parts. “The hour drew nigh and the moon was rent in twain.” (Surah 54:1 Pickthall translation) If this had actually occured then how come nobody else on Earth noticed it? Also,if the moon had split and then rejoined, the energy involved would have melted the moon and wiped out all the craters that we see today on its surface.

Here is one solid hint to make you think seriously and makes you investigate the TRUTH: Dr. Gerald C. Goeringer is Course Director and Associate Professor of Medical Embryology at the Department of Cell Biology, School of Medicine, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA. During the Eighth Saudi Medical Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Professor Goeringer stated the following in the presentation of his research paper: “In a relatively few aayahs (Quranic verses) is contained a rather comprehensive description of human development from the time of commingling of the gametes through organogenesis. No such distinct and complete record of human development, such as classification, terminology, and description, existed previously. In most, if not all, instances, this description antedates by many centuries the recording of the various stages of human embryonic and fetal development recorded in the traditional scientific literature.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/goeringer-1.ram)

Another hint to help you: Professor Tejatat Tejasen is the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Previously, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the same university. During the Eighth Saudi Medical Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Professor Tejasen stood up and said: “During the last three years, I became interested in the Quran . . . . From my study and what I have learned from this conference, I believe that everything that has been recorded in the Quran fourteen hundred years ago must be the truth, that can be proved by the scientific means. Since the Prophet Muhammad could neither read nor write, Muhammad must be a messenger who relayed this truth, which was revealed to him as an enlightenment by the one who is eligible [as the] creator. This creator must be God. Therefore, I think this is the time to say La ilaha illa Allah, there is no god to worship except Allah (God), Muhammadur rasoolu Allah, Muhammad is Messenger (Prophet) of Allah (God). Lastly, I must congratulate for the excellent and highly successful arrangement for this conference . . . . I have gained not only from the scientific point of view and religious point of view but also the great chance of meeting many well-known scientists and making many new friends among the participants. The most precious thing of all that I have gained by coming to this place is La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah, and to have become a Muslim.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/tejasen-1.ram )

You need More Scientific Proofs! Dr. William W. Hay is a well-known marine scientist. He is Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA. He was formerly the Dean of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami, Miami, Florida, USA. After a discussion with Professor Hay about the Quran’s mention of recently discovered facts on seas, he said: “I find it very interesting that this sort of information is in the ancient scriptures of the Holy Quran, and I have no way of knowing where they would come from, but I think it is extremely interesting that they are there and that this work is going on to discover it, the meaning of some of the passages.” And when he was asked about the source of the Quran, he replied: “Well, I would think it must be the divine being.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/hay-1.ram )

I guess you need more Scientific proofs! Dr. Yoshihide Kozai is Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University, Hongo, Tokyo, Japan, and was the Director of the National Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan. He said: “I am very much impressed by finding true astronomical facts in [the] Quran, and for us the modern astronomers have been studying very small pieces of the universe. We’ve concentrated our efforts for understanding of [a] very small part. Because by using telescopes, we can see only very few parts [of] the sky without thinking [about the] whole universe. So, by reading [the] Quran and by answering to the questions, I think I can find my future way for investigation of the universe.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/kozai-1.ram ) "We (Allah) will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?" [The Noble Quran 41:53]

Wait! Maybe you are still in shock! So you need one more Scientific proof? Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson is the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Professor of Molecular and Human Genetics at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA. Formerly, he was Professor of Ob-Gyn and the Chairman of the Department of Ob-Gyn at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. He was also the President of the American Fertility Society. He has received many awards, including the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology Public Recognition Award in 1992. Professor Simpson studied the following two sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): {In every one of you, all components of your creation are collected together in your mother’s womb by forty days...}1 {If forty-two nights have passed over the embryo, God sends an angel to it, who shapes it and creates its hearing, vision, skin, flesh, and bones....}2 He studied these two sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) extensively, noting that the first forty days constitute a clearly distinguishable stage of embryo-genesis. He was particularly impressed by the absolute precision and accuracy of those sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Then, during one conference, he gave the following opinion: “So that the two hadeeths (the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ) that have been noted provide us with a specific time table for the main embryological development before forty days. Again, the point has been made, I think, repeatedly by other speakers this morning: these hadeeths could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was available [at] the time of their writing . . . . It follows, I think, that not only there is no conflict between genetics and religion but, in fact, religion can guide science by adding revelation to some of the traditional scientific approaches, that there exist statements in the Quran shown centuries later to be valid, which support knowledge in the Quran having been derived from God.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/simpson-1.ram ) Footnotes: ========= (1) Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, #2643, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #3208. It's the same with every religious text. What the Christian God can do can't be proven possible using modern science. Because once ALL scientific possibilities are ruled out; than only the impossibilities become possible.

I got one more surprise for you! The Quran on Human Embryonic Development: In the Holy Quran, Allah (God) speaks about the stages of man’s embryonic development: "We (Allah) created man (Adam) from an extract of clay. Then We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed. Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended thing, and blood clot), then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance) then We made the mudgah into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation...." 1 [The Noble Quran, 23:12-14] Literally, the Arabic word alaqah has three meanings: (1) leech, (2) suspended thing, and (3) blood clot. Professor Emeritus Keith L. Moore is one of the world’s most prominent scientists in the fields of anatomy and embryology and is the author of the book entitled The Developing Human, which has been translated into eight languages. This book is a scientific reference work and was chosen by a special committee in the United States as the best book authored by one person. Dr. Keith Moore is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. There, he was Associate Dean of Basic Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and for 8 years was the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy. In 1984, he received the most distinguished award presented in the field of anatomy in Canada, the J.C.B. Grant Award from the Canadian Association of Anatomists. He has directed many international associations, such as the Canadian and American Association of Anatomists and the Council of the Union of Biological Sciences. In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Professor Moore said: “It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Quran about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God.” (To view the RealPlayer video of this comment click here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/moore-1.ram ). Consequently, Professor Moore was asked the following question: “Does this mean that you believe that the Quran is the word of God?” He replied: “I find no difficulty in accepting this.” During one conference, Professor Moore stated: “....Because the staging of human embryos is complex, owing to the continuous process of change during development, it is proposed that a new system of classification could be developed using the terms mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah (what Muhammad said, did, or approved of). The proposed system is simple, comprehensive, and conforms with present embryological knowledge. The intensive studies of the Quran and hadeeth (reliably transmitted reports by the Prophet Muhammad’s companions of what he said, did, or approved of) in the last four years have revealed a system for classifying human embryos that is amazing since it was recorded in the seventh century A.D. Although Aristotle, the founder of the science of embryology, realized that chick embryos developed in stages from his studies of hen’s eggs in the fourth century B.C., he did not give any details about these stages. As far as it is known from the history of embryology, little was known about the staging and classification of human embryos until the twentieth century. For this reason, the descriptions of the human embryo in the Quran cannot be based on scientific knowledge in the seventh century. The only reasonable conclusion is: these descriptions were revealed to Muhammad from God. He could not have known such details because he was an illiterate man with absolutely no scientific training.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/moore-2.ram ).

Excuse me but I think you need one more scientific proof! right? Dr. E. Marshall Johnson is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Developmental Biology at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. There, for 22 years he was Professor of Anatomy, the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy, and the Director of the Daniel Baugh Institute. He was also the President of the Teratology Society. He has authored more than 200 publications. In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Professor Johnson said in the presentation of his research paper: “Summary: The Quran describes not only the development of external form, but emphasizes also the internal stages, the stages inside the embryo, of its creation and development, emphasizing major events recognized by contemporary science.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/johnson-1.ram ) Also he said: “As a scientist, I can only deal with things which I can specifically see. I can understand embryology and developmental biology. I can understand the words that are translated to me from the Quran. As I gave the example before, if I were to transpose myself into that era, knowing what I knew today and describing things, I could not describe the things which were described. I see no evidence for the fact to refute the concept that this individual, Muhammad, had to be developing this information from some place. So I see nothing here in conflict with the concept that divine intervention was involved in what he was able to write.”(1) (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/johnson-2.ram ) Footnote: ========= (1) The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was illiterate. He could not read nor write, but he dictated the Quran to his Companions and commanded some of them to write it down.

I can feel that there is one person there who asks for more hints! From Atheism to Islam: Video Dr. Jeffrey Lang A Journey from Atheism to Islam in America. Watch the interview here: http://www.thedeenshow.com/shows_30.htm Watch this interview with Dr. Jeffrey Lang who is a Full Professor of Mathematics at the University of Kansas, one of the biggest universities in the United States. He started his religious journey on Jan 30, 1954, when he was born in a Roman Catholic family in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The first 18 years of his life were spent in Catholic schools, which left him with many unanswered questions about God and the Christian religion, Lang said, as he narrated his story of Islam "Like most kids back in the late 60s and early 70s, I started questioning all the values that we had at those times, political, social and religious," Lang said "I rebelled against all the institutions that society held sacred including the Catholic Church," he said. By the time he reached the age of 18, Lang had become a full-fledged atheist. "If there is a God, and he is all merciful and all loving, then why is there suffering on this earth? Why does not He just take us to heaven? Why create all these people to suffer?" Such were the questions that came up in his mind in those days. As a young lecturer in mathematics at San Francisco University, Lang found his religion where God is finally a reality. I invite you to listen here live to the rest of his story and how he came to Islam, open your mind humble your heart and enjoy the Show. Is there one more scientific proof!? Yes I got one more scientific proof: Dr. T. V. N. Persaud is Professor of Anatomy, Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health, and Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. There, he was the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy for 16 years. He is well-known in his field. He is the author or editor of 22 textbooks and has published over 181 scientific papers. In 1991, he received the most distinguished award presented in the field of anatomy in Canada, the J.C.B. Grant Award from the Canadian Association of Anatomists. When he was asked about the scientific miracles in the Quran which he has researched, he stated the following: “The way it was explained to me is that Muhammad was a very ordinary man. He could not read, didn’t know [how] to write. In fact, he was an illiterate. And we’re talking about twelve [actually about fourteen] hundred years ago. You have someone illiterate making profound pronouncements and statements and that are amazingly accurate about scientific nature. And I personally can’t see how this could be a mere chance. There are too many accuracies and, like Dr. Moore, I have no difficulty in my mind that this is a divine inspiration or revelation which led him to these statements.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/persaud-1.ram ) Professor Persaud has included some Quranic verses and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in some of his books. He has also presented these verses and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at several conferences. '[52] Say: "Tell me, if it (the Quran) is from Allah (God), and you disbelieve in it? Who is more astray than one who is in opposition far away (from Allah's Right Path and His obedience). [53] We (Allah) will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?" [The Noble Quran 41:52-53]

The Scientific Evidences in Proving The Divinity of the Noble Quran -The Quran on The Expansion of the Universe: In the Quran, which was revealed 14 centuries ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described like this: "And it is We (Allah) who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it." [The Noble Quran 51: 47] The word “heaven”, as stated in this verse, is used in various places in the Quran with the meaning of space and universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning. In other words, in the Quran, it is communicated that the universe “expands”. And this is the very conclusion that science has reached today. Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that “the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time”. The research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology, however, revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning and that it constantly expands. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian physicist Alexander Friedmann and the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre theoretically calculated that the universe is in constant motion and that it is expanding. This fact was proved also by observational data in 1929. While observing the sky with a telescope, Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer, discovered that the stars and galaxies were constantly moving away from each other. A universe where everything constantly moves away from each other implied a constantly expanding universe. The observations carried out in the following years verified that the universe constantly expands. Refer to this NASA website for evidences for Expansion of the Universe http://helios.gsfc.nasa.gov/qa_sp_ex.html. This fact was explained in the Quran when it was yet unknown by anyone. This is because the Quran is the word of God, the Creator, and the Ruler of the entire universe.

The Scientific Evidences in Proving The Divinity of the Noble Quran - Quran on Bee’s role in nature This is what modern science has to say on the topic of zoology, in particular bees. Today science tells us that the male bee has only one purpose, and that is to reproduce with the female - there's really no other purpose for a male bee. Now here's the important point - however, the worker bee or the soldier bee is a female bee. She is the one that builds the nest, leaves her home, and goes out in search of food. This what modern science tells us - that we have discovered only recently. Now it takes a specialist in the field to detect the sex of the bee - you cannot look at it from the naked eye - it is impossible, there is no way you can look at it that way. Now let us see what the Quran says about bees. Now, keep one thing in mind here. In the Arabic language, animals are either male or female. Like in English we have the word cow - "the cow in the pasture" - that does not tell us if the cow is male or female. But in Arabic animals are either male or female. There is no gender neutral term for animals. Let's look inside chapter sixteen verse sixty-eight. It says over there: "and thy Lord taught the bee" (here it is specified a female bee) "to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in men's habitations, then to eat of all the produce and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord." [The Noble Quran 16:68] This is exactly what modern science today tell us - that the bee that goes out and builds the nest, that goes out looking for food, as what the Quran has mentioned, is indeed the female bee. Now, how did the author of the Quran know this scientific statement, that the bee that leaves the nest in search of food is the female bee? Perhaps the author of the Quran was a genius or a scientist. Well, I don't think that could be a possibility, becuase no matter how smart you are, you'll never be able to detect the sex of a bee, unless you had these modern scientific methods/capabilities which did not exist 1400 years ago, so those could not be a possibility. Perhaps the scientific fact is observable. Well, this is not true either, because you cannot look at the bees and tell which one is a male or female. Moreover, this information about the bees never pre-existed in history.

Quran States The Sun & The Moon Run on a Fixed Course (Orbits) Allah (God) stated in the Noble Quran more than 1400 years ago this new discovered scientific fact about the fixed course of the Sun: "And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing." [Quran 36:38] This fact has only been discovered recently and here is a NASA link emphasizing this scientific fact which has been told by Allah (God) in the Noble Quran more than 1400 years ago: NASA Link Does the Sun move around the Milky Way?? http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/questions/question18.html The following is quoted from that NASA website: Quote: "Yes, the Sun - in fact, our whole solar system - orbits around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are moving at an average velocity of 828,000 km/hr. But even at that high rate, it still takes us about 230 million years to make one complete orbit around the Milky Way! The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. We believe that it consists of a central bulge, 4 major arms, and several shorter arm segments. The Sun (and, of course, the rest of our solar system) is located near the Orion arm, between two major arms (Perseus and Sagittarius). The diameter of the Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years and the Sun is located about 28,000 light-years from the Galactic Center. You can see a drawing of the Milky Way below which shows what our Galaxy would look like "face-on" and the direction in which it would spin as viewed from that vantage point. Also shown, is the location of the Sun in the big picture view of our Galaxy." Today, we all know, and this is not a surprise for anyone, that the moon actually moves in an orbit - a circular path, we all know that. But the scientists also tell us today that the sun also has an orbit, which many people do not know. Yes, all the planets are revolving around the sun, but the sun has an orbit in which is revolves around the center of the Milky Way galaxy. So both the sun and the moon have an orbit. This is what scientists have only recently discovered. Let me now point you to chapter twenty-one, verse thirty-three of the Quran. It says over there: "and He it is Who has created the night and the day, the sun and the moon, each in an orbit floating." [The Noble Quran 21:33] The Quran clearly states that the sun and the moon have an orbit, and that word, falak (appears in the verse), if you look in the Hans-Wehr dictionary, that word refers to a woman's chest, a round woman's chest. So it talks about that the sun and moon have a circular orbit. So this is a statement which clearly agrees with modern science.

The Quran on the Origin of the Universe: The science of modern cosmology, observational and theoretical, clearly indicates that, at one point in time, the whole universe was nothing but a cloud of ‘smoke’ (i.e. an opaque highly dense and hot gaseous composition)1. This is one of the undisputed principles of standard modern cosmology. Scientists now can observe new stars forming out of the remnants of that ‘smoke'. The illuminating stars we see at night were, just as was the whole universe, in that ‘smoke’ material. God has said in the Quran: Then He turned to the heaven when it was smoke... (Quran, 41:11) Because the earth and the heavens above (the sun, the moon, stars, planets, galaxies, etc.) have been formed from this same ‘smoke,’ we conclude that the earth and the heavens were one connected entity. Then out of this homogeneous ‘smoke,’ they formed and separated from each other. God has said in the Quran: "Have not those who disbelieved known that the heavens and the earth were one connected entity, then We separated them?..." (Quran, 21:30) Dr. Alfred Kroner is one of the world’s renowned geologists. He is Professor of Geology and the Chairman of the Department of Geology at the Institute of Geosciences, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. He said: “Thinking where Muhammad came from . . . I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case.” (To view the RealPlayer video of this comment click here (To view the RealPlayer video of this comment click here http://www.islam-guide.com/video/kroner-1.ram ). Also he said: “Somebody who did not know something about nuclear physics fourteen hundred years ago could not, I think, be in a position to find out from his own mind, for instance, that the earth and the heavens had the same origin.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment http://www.islam-guide.com/video/kroner-2.ram ). Again, how did the author of the Quran know this scientific statement, about the origin of the uinverse? Perhaps the author of the Quran was a genius or a scientist. Well, I don't think that could be a possibility, becuase no matter how smart you are, you'll never be able to discover the origin of the uinverse, unless you had these advanced modern scientific methods/capabilities which did not exist 1400 years ago, so those could not be a possibility. Perhaps the scientific fact is observable. Well, this is not true either. Moreover, this information about the uinverse never pre-existed in history. Another example from the Koran is the story of King Solomon being able to talk to birds and ants. http://www.readingislam.com/servlet/Satellite?c=Article_C&cid=1233567613720&pagename=Zone-English-Discover_Islam%2FDIELayout The Koran portrays him as an Islamic Dr Dolittle. The ants can talk and fully understand human language and that they are concious sentient beings just like little people.Perhaps some ants are Muslims!

The Latest Quran Scientific Miracle Proved True !! Ants routinely speak to each other ! Just until lately, non-muslim anti-islamic losers used to boast that they have finally found a scientific mistake in the Quran (they wish!). Those claimed that ants cannot speak, they only communicate with chemical signals. However, just recently, scientists and researchers from famous universities (such as Oxford) carried out experiences with new microphone technologies and proved the ants routinely speak to each others and they may have a much bigger vocabulary then what we may have thought. See this video clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-fLNrw0O3U Allah Almighty says in the Noble Quran: "Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said: 'O ants! enter Your dwellings, lest Sulaiman (prophet Solomon) and his hosts crush you, while they perceive not.' So He [Sulaiman (Solomon)] smiled, amused at her speech." (The Noble Quran; An-Naml: 18-19). (Allah gifted prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) with the ability to hear and understand these sounds) The Holy Quran is always in complete agreement with the scientific finidings. This proves that it reaaly revealed from Allah (God). A report in the science magazine says" Advances in audio technology have enabled scientists to discover that ants routinely talk to each other in their nests. The findings were reported in the journal Science Hills are alive with the sound of ants — talking to each other - Times Online http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article5672006.ece

Here is another example of the Koran contradicting Modern Science. According to the Koran, the Earth is flat and stationary at the centre of the Universe and the Sun and Moon are just little lights that move across the Sky every 24 hours. I had not intended to give another answer to this question, in order to give others the opportunity to answer as well, but this issue arose in the comments of another question and I think that it is best to keep separate examples in separate questions. I would be interested in hearing replies to the above question from JIM or Rabeea since they both are obviously interested in my answers. I regret the length of this answer, but responding to “Jesus is Muslim” requires it. When discussing the Koran, there is always the risk of somebody using inaccurate or dishonest translations. For this reason, I think that it is a good idea to use multiple translations, which can be found, at sites such as this one. http://qb.gomen.org/QuranBrowser/ A good place to start is Surah 36:38-40 “And the Sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise And for the Moon we have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf. It is not for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.” Surah 36:38-40 (Pickthall) The above test is just for an overview. I will now proceed to go through each verse using 12 translations and see what they tell us about the Cosmology of the Koran. Bear in mind that for all of human history up until AD1543, it was Universally accepted by Christians, Muslims and everyone else that the Earth was static in the centre of the Universe and that heavenly bodies were just little lights moving around in the Sky. Now look at Surah 36:38 with multiple translations. The first six translations are by Muslims and the remaining six are by non-Muslims. 1. “And the Sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.” (Pickthall) 2. “And the Sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.” (Yusuf Ali) 3. “And the Sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All Mighty, the All-Knowing.” (Hilali Khan) 4. “And the Sun runs on to a term appointed for it; that is the ordinance of the Mighty, the Knowing. “(Shakir) 5. “And the Sun is moving on to its determined goal. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing God.” (Sher Ali) 6. “The sun Sets into a specific location, according to the design of the Almighty, the Omniscient.” (Khalifa) 7. “And the Sun -- it runs to a fixed resting-place; that is the ordaining of the All mighty, the All-knowing.” (Arberry) 8. “And the Sun runs on to a place of rest for it; that is the ordinance of the mighty, the wise.” (Palmer) 9. “And the Sun hasteneth to her place of rest. This, the ordinance of the Mighty, the Knowing!” (Rodwell) 10. And the Sun hasteneth to his place of rest. This [is] the disposition of the mighty, the wise [God]. (Sale) 11. “The Sun runs along on a course of its own. Such is the designof the Powerful, the Aware!” (Irving) 12. “The Sun hastens to its resting place, its coarse is laid out for it by the mighty one, the all knowing.” (Dawood) The Koran clearly speaks of the Sun moving to a resting place. Khalifa identifies the resting place of the Sun with Sunset. Yusuf Ali, Hilali Khan & Shakir identify this motion of the Sun with a period of time implying that the period of time in question is the hours of daylight. Some have tried to argue that the reference to the Suns motion is referring to the Solar System being gravitationally attracted to the Star Vega. However the Koran does not say this. Nowhere is there any reference to Vega or the Solar System. In fact the concept of a Solar System is not mentioned anywhere in the Koran. Nowhere does the Koran explicitly state that the Earth is one of several Planets orbiting the Sun. Some might argue that the references to the motion of the Sun are just referring to the apparent motion and not literal motion. After all, it might be argued, we still say “Sunrise” and “Sunset” in everyday life even though we do not mean it literally. However, unlike Mohammed, we live in a post Copernican world. Anyone wishing to claim that the Koran is referring only to apparent motion of the Sun must first demonstrate that it contains such knowledge rather than merely assuming that it does. Furthermore, the terms “Sunrise” and “Sunset” are linguistic fossils, which we use out of habit. The Heliocentric ideas of Copernicus were not fully accepted until around AD1700 by scientists and it was many decades late before the man or woman in the street accepted them. Nowadays we say “Sunrise” and “Sunset” due to force of habit. We used to mean them literally. People in the time of Mohammed 140 years ago did not do this. When they said “Sunrise” and “Sunset” they meant it literally. Another thing to notice about Surah 36:38 is not only does it refer to literal daily motion of the Sun, but it also implies that when it is nighttime in Arabia, that it is nighttime everywhere and the Sun is resting somewhere and not shining. The author of the Koran does not know that when it is night in Arabia, it is daytime on the other side of the world. This implies a belief in a flat Earth on which everywhere experience night and day at the same time. But, where is the resting place of the Sun where it goes at night. What does the Koran say about its location? Look at Surah 18:85-86. This refers to a man traveling to the extreme west, the direction of Sunset. 1. “And he followed a road till, when he reached the setting-place of the Sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring.” (Pickthall) 2. “One (such) way he followed, until, when he reached the setting of the Sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water.” (Yusuf Ali) 3. “So he followed a way. until, when he reached the setting place of the Sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water.” (Hilali-Khan) 4. “So he followed a course. until when he reached the place where the Sun set, he found it going down into a black sea.” (Shakir) 5. “Then he followed a certain way. until when he reached the setting-place of the Sun, he found it setting as if in a pool of murky water.” (Sher Ali) 6. “Then, he pursued one way. When he reached the far west, he found the Sun setting in a vast ocean.” (Khalifa) 7. “Then he followed a way until, when he reached the setting of the Sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring.” (Arberry) 8. “Then he followed a way until when he reached the setting of the Sun, he found it setting in a black muddy spring.” (Palmer) 9. ”Then followed he a route, until when he reached the setting of the Sun, he found it to set in a miry fount.” (Rodwell) 10. “Then he continued [his] way until he came to the place where the Sun setteth; [and] he found it to set in a spring of black mud.” (Sale) 11. “So he followed a [certain] course until when he reached the place where the Sun sets, he found it setting in a mucky spring.” (Irving) 12. “He journeyed on a certain road until he reached the West and saw the Sun setting in a pool of black mud.” (Dawood) According to the above verses, the Sun sets in either a pool of water or the sea. Either way, it goes underwater. Picture 1 shows the Sun setting according to the Koran. Some might argue that this is not meant to be taken literally. They might say that it merely describes the Sun disappearing below the horizon. However, this is not what the Koran actually says and it is dishonest to try and change the words. Secondly, this interpretation cannot be true, as the above verse refer not to Sunset in general, but to the Sun setting in a specific place in the west that you can go to. You can observe Sunsets from anywhere on Earth, but the traveler in this story needs to go to a specific location. Another way to look at this is to ask what way Mohammed interpreted the Koran and its reference to the setting place of the Sun. Here is what Mohammed is reported as saying in an authenticated Hadith concerning the setting place of the Sun. Al-Bukhari Hadith Volume 4, Book 54, Number 421: Narrated Abu Dhar: The Prophet asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the Sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: "And the Sun runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing." (36.38) According to Mohammed, the resting place of the Sun is beneath the throne of Allah during the hours of darkness in Arabia. Notice how Mohammed says nothing about the Earths rotation, but rather speaks of the Sun literally moving. From all of this, most people would interpret Surah 36:38 as saying that the Sun literally moves across the Sky every day above a flat stationary Earth. Picture 2 shows how the Sun literally moves relative to Earth according to the Koran and Hadith. Now, look at the next verse, Surah 36:39 again with multiple translations. 1. “And for the Moon we have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf.” (Pickthall) 2. “And the Moon, - We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.” (Yusuf Ali) 3. “And the Moon, we have measured for it mansions (to traverse) till it returns like the old dried curved date stalk.” (Hilali-Khan) 4. “And (as for) the Moon, we have ordained for it stages till it becomes again as an old dry palm branch.” (Shakir) 5. “And for the Moon we have appointed stages, till it becomes again like an old dry twig of a palm-tree.” (Sher Ali) 6. “The Moon we designed to appear in stages, until it becomes like an old curved sheath.” (Khalifa) 7. “And the Moon -- We have determined it by stations, till it returns like an aged palm-bough.” (Arberry) 8. “And the Moon, we have ordered for it stations, until it comes again to be like an old dry palm branch.” (Palmer) 9. “And as for the Moon, we have decreed stations for it, till it change like an old and crooked palm branch.” (Rodwell) 10. “And for the Moon have we appointed [certain] mansions, until she [change and] return [to be] like the old branch of a palm-tree.” (Sale) 11. “And we have designed phases for the Moon so it finally appears again like an old palm frond.” (Irving) 12. “We have ordained phases for the Moon, which daily wanes and in the end appears likea bent old twig.” (Dawood) It is interesting that Pickthall, Yusuf Ali, Hilali-Khan & Sale use the word “mansions” to describe the phases of the moon. A mansion is a large luxurious house. Why should they use such a word? We all know that the moon is seen almost entirely at night and only rarely during the day. Nowadays we know that this is due to the Earths rotation. Often, we can see the moon at night, but not the following day. In the Ancient World, before people knew that the Earth was a sphere and that it rotated, it was a puzzle as to where the moon was during the day. The “solution” was to propose that during the daytime, the moon retreated out of sight into some sort of hidden houses or mansions in the sky. There were usually 28 mansions of the moon and each was associated with a different phase. When the Koran refers to “mansions” of the moon, it appears to be assuming the existence of hidden houses in the sky where the moon hides during the daytime This if a further indication that the author of the Koran thought that the Earth was flat. Now, look at the third verse, Surah 36:40 again with multiple translations. 1. “It is not for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.” (Pickthall) 2. “It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).” (Yusuf Ali) 3. “It is not for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float, each in an orbit”. (Hilali-Khan) 4. “Neither is it allowable to the Sun that it should overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; and all float on in a sphere.” (Shakir) 5. “It is not for the Sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. All of them float smoothly in an orbit.” (Sher Ali) 6. “The Sun is never to catch up with the moon - the night and the day never deviate - each of them is floating in its own orbit.” (Khalifa) 7. “It behoves not the Sun to overtake the moon, neither does the night outstrip the day, each swimming in a sky.” (Arberry) 8. “Neither is it proper for it to catch up the moon, nor for the night to outstrip the day, but each one floats on in its sky.” (Palmer) 9. “To the Sun it is not given to overtake the Moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day; but each in its own sphere doth journey on.” (Rodwell) 10. “It is not expedient that the Sun should overtake the Moon [in her course]; neither doth the night outstrip the day: But each [of these luminaries] moveth in a [peculiar] orbit.” (Sale) 11. “The Sun is not allowed to overtake the Moon, nor the night outpace the day. Each in its own orbit swims.” (Dawood) 12. “The Sun dare not overtake the Moon nor does night outpace the day. Each floats along in its own orbit.” (Irving) What can we tell from this verse? Firstly, it speaks of the Sun not being allowed to overtake the Moon. This suggests that such a thing is possible at least in principal. This means that the author of the Koran thinks that the Sun orbits above the Earth in a manner simmilar to the Moon. It also implies that both Sun and Moon are of similar size and distance from the Earth. The verse then goes on to describe the alternation of day and night, in the same sentence as it mentions the orbit of the Sun and Moon above the Earth. This also implies that both Sun and Moon orbit above the Earth every 24 hours, which is completely wrong. From all this, we can see that the author of the Koran knows nothing about Astronomy. He believes in a Geocentric Cosmology and a Flat stationary Earth. This suggests that Mohammed, not God is the Author of the Koran, since God would not make such mistake
