I may be wrong but I think it was invented some time in WW1 by colonal Thompson[Thompson's machine gun]

The first fully automatic gun was the Maxim machine gun invented in 1885. It was the first gun to use the recoil of the spent round to eject the spent casing, cock, and reload the gun.
