Probably to help pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the building. It is a very old building and is, in places, falling apart. The state does not give money to religious establishments within the UK so this is probably a way to raise funds. However, you can enter the basement and goto the restaurant without paying an entrance fee. It is only a small restaurant, but does some great lunch time pizza's.
