Yes, it's true, and from what I'm aware there are guards at the border that will check your passport and do a search on you or something. At least, that's what my boyfriend told me (he is Muslim, I am not.)

Yes, but it's no big deal. There are many locations closer by that one is not allowed to enter unless one has a valid reason to do so. In certain sensitive places, like army barracks, you might even get shot if you are seen loitering in their vicinity without authorisation. If you try to enter a block of offices you will be challenged by the security at the reception to show your ID or declare your business (the same happens at entry points into Mecca). You cannot enter into your own child's classroom and start walking about in it admiring the posters and other teaching material as you'll disrupt the teaching. Mecca is a place where there are always Muslims trying to get into deep concentration in their devotion. If those who have no business to be there are allowed in it will only disrupt the concentration of the worshippers.

To the best of my knowledge, yes, non-Muslims are NOT allowed to step foot on Mecca, Islam's holiest city.

First of all there is no International airport in Mecca that I am aware of. Secondly on a highway approach you will see signs informing you that you are going to Mecca(Or if going to Medina same thing) and the signs will indicate that only Muslims should proceed past a certain exit. Later you will encounter checkpoints and your visa to the country will be evidence of your reason for being there and you must be able to prove that you are a muslim in order to go to Mecca. Becoming a muslim is an easy process and yes membership has its priveledges.
