  • Just a guess, but I'd say probably something like one percent or less. That probably works for American adults in general, though, or at least those not in college. Even then. Of course, a simple tally of books read in a year won't tell you the quality of those books. A more revealing question would be "What percent of American adults read a single worthwhile book in a year." Of course, most people, raised to be democratic and egalitarian and to have no cultural standards will kvetch that any book can be a good book or something along that line. A good remedy for this thinking is C.S. Lewis's _An Experiment in Criticism_.
