First off, Mao's death toll was about 70 million. Also, China controlled the media, and controlled the news that came in and out of China. When we were at war with Germany, it was an open media. Also, most of the deaths caused by Mao were unintentional, and Hitler murdered the Jews on purpose.

Excellent question. I think partly because of cultural reasons. We often have a western-centric point of view, and as Hitler was a western tyrant, we are more aware of his atrocities - which where felt in the West. These have also been well documented by Hollywood. On the other hand with Mao being all the way in China, the Western public aren't as aware of the crimes he has committed, also the regime that he was part of still runs China, and therefore the Chinese are not openly against Mao, whereas the Germans are against Hitler.
