Do you think people should make the effort of thoroughly searching for the questions they're about to ask in the "search for answers" before posting or just relying on the 3 top "similar questions" is enough?

Since I have just been guilty of this very faux pas I think I should answer this. :) Probably some research beyond the first three should be done (as I didn't do, I will be more scrupulous in future) but there are recurrent themes on here that might not come up in a search anyway. SO is a difficult conundrum. How thorough a search is (un)acceptable? I suppose the other point is what harm does it do? It doesn't bother me to be fair but perhaps others could explain why it is annoying/a problem? I don't think it would be a technical limitation of the site but I am not sure :)
