The specifics vary by individual, and by time -- we try to escape different things at different times. To find out exactly, you have to sit quietly and observe your own internal state very carefully moment to moment. At one moment, you might be trying to escape the thought "I should get up and do something useful", and at another moment, there might be an irritating sense of anxiety that has no apparent cause. What's more important is seeing where we go when we try to escape -- that we escape into THINKING. Reminiscing, fantasizing, obsessively trying to figure out one thing or another, holding mock debates between ourselves and our detractors in our minds, daydreaming, etc. This kind of thinking dominates normal consciousness, and prevents us from experiencing our lives fully. Bringing it under control involves lots of awareness practice: a steady effort to notice these mental distractions and return to here-and-now.

I escape nothing. I face everything head on regardless of my understanding, beliefs or morals. I have encountered many obsticles that would warrant an escape and have sometimes forced myself to find a solution rather than an escape.

I think that a lot of people are trying to escape themselves, and their problems. That's why there are people who move from school to school or city to city to get away from themselves. That's why there are songs and books that explain how you can't run from yourself. That is why people hide themselves in video games, computer games, music, and so on. That is why people hide themselves in hope. That is why people hide it in eating food or trying to find the perfect person. When it all comes down to it, a lot of us feel empty deep down. A lot of us want something more out of life because we feel like we are missing something and aren't sure what. Authors try to find the answers, singers try to find the answers, experts try to find the answers, doctors try to find the answers, but what is it? What is it that causes this emptiness, this meaninglessness? Can you explain why you watch a lot of movies if you do? Can you explain why you find yourself absorbed in music if you do? Can you explain why you're drawn to Answerbag if you are? Can you honestly say that you are happy with your answer, or are you still unsure?

Taxes....but just no way around it:(

Admitting that we don't have the answers to anything, we don't "know" anything, but we keep acting as if we have all the answers...we are blind, walking at midnight on a starless night and we haven't a clue where we are, who we are or who is walking alongside us! :)
