  • I did not think it was possible to graduate while being illiterate. I thought they just got old enough and left school!
  • It is a damned shame. I can only opine that the public education system cannot focus upon all the problem children due to the fact that they are under funded and cannot focus upon all the problem children hence: they lowered the standards. At least one out of three graduates is a dee dee dee as seen in the video.
  • I saw a film once where a guy graduated high school and got into collage because he got an american football scholarship. I don't know if that actually happens though....
  • Well, I know that at the school I go to, you have to pass the Grade 10 Literacy test in order to graduate because of that. It's probably because the standards for reading aren't that high anymore. I'm literate, though, and so are my classmates. That's what it seems like to me anyway.
  • Because schools don't teach anything anymore. They let the kids sit around and do nothing.
  • The "No Child Left Behind" act might be to blame. The name sounds good, but deceptive, as are many other acts of Congress. With TV, movies, and other media competing with the printed word, kids today don't like to read. Our textbooks are often "dumbed down" so a student who is reading 3-4 years below grade level could understand them. Most tests are true-false or multiple choice, which allows guessing and even cheating. These are easiest to grade, but cheating would be difficult to detect. Essays are better in this regard. Cheating could be suspected if there are words that are unusually advanced, or not normally used, or if the handwriting is different.
  • I have read about "teaching to the test", in which nearly everything taught relates to the upcoming test. After that, many students forget what had been taught. Also, due to the long summer vacation, necessary in the 19th century, many kids don't use the skills acquired in the previous school year. With TV and videogames competing against books and other educational activities, many lose interest in learning.
