If you mean change a light fixture, you can certainly read a how-to book or look online for instructions. I've done at least a dozen myself. Just turn off the power before you start -- I don't trust just turning the switch off.

Although this is not a particularly difficult task, there are a few things you should do first:

    - In some jurisdictions, it is illegal to make any changes to the electrical wiring in your home without using a licensed electrician and/or acquiring a building permit and having the modifications checked by a building inspector. This would fall under both municipal and provincial / state legislation.

    - Get yourself a copy of the electrical code for your jurisdiction. This may be available in a simplified version with illustrations for those of us who are not professional electricians, but need to know what the code demands. Even if the job does not require an electrician, building permit, or inspection, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the electrical code. If nothing else, it will let you determine if the previous owner of your home made changes to the electrical service that violated code. This was the case in my last home and could not be seen by the building inspector, because the problems were behind walls. I usually do my own electrical work and own an illustrated and simplified copy of the electrical code for the Province of Ontario, which I purchased from a construction supply outlet.

    - Ensure that any fixtures you purchase meet the requirements of the electrical code in your jurisdiction for use in a bathroom. Bathrooms can require special electrical fixtures and switches that are approved for use under wet conditions. They may also have to be installed in a specific way to meet code. If the fixture is located where it might get wet (e.g., inside or within a specific distance of a tub or shower enclosure), you would need a fixture that is rated for use in wet areas. These usually have more plastic parts to provide better electrical insulation.

    - If the electrical code in your jurisdiction has changed since your house was built, any changes you make to the electrical system must meet current standards, not those that were in force at the time the house was built. If the old fixture was not on a three-wire grounded circuit, for example, you may need to have the circuit upgraded before the fixture can be changed.
