It was because of his paintings. Vincent van Gogh,.... did in fact leave us all a record of his life, in all his letters,.... what he had gone through, in the 37 years that he was alive, seen and felt mostly through viewing his works of art.

It was because of his work. Although he wasn't really famous in his own lifetime, if he had not committed suicide, he would have realized that he would be famous. His own mother lived to see his fame. He had the highest price ever paid for one art work which was 82.5 million dollars. It was a portrait of Dr.Gachet.
