    a bit is either a 1 or a 0, on or off.
    A byte is a series of 8 bits.
    A word is two bytes in a row.

    Bit is an abbreviation of BInary digiT, the smallest piece of information in a computer.

    A byte is 8 bits.

    A word (in an Intel based system) is 2 consecutive bytes, or 16 bits.
