  • If you are interested in Roman ruins, of course, you would want to go to Italy. However, better preserved Roman monuments can be found in southern France. When Rome was sacked in 476, the monuments in Rome itself were heavily damaged by the Vandals, Ostrogoths, Visigoths as a blow to the pride of the Roman people. However, no one traveled to the cities such as Nimes and Arles in the Rhone delta which had been established by the Romans. The spectacular aquaduct, Le Pont du Gard is found just outside of Nimes, the temple Maison Carree in the city itself. Nimes also has an outstanding amphitheatre. Arles has some impressive ruins and a Roman graveyard. South of Rome are the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities that were destroyed very suddenly by volcanic eruptions. Pompeii especially has done a great deal of work in the past decade to establish a much nicer museum on site than previously existed. In Greece, of course you would want to visit Athens and surrounding area, but there are many outstanding ruins in the smaller towns as well.
  • I wouldn't say that any major cruise lines mediterranean cruise specifically focus on visiting archaeological ruins. However, the cruise lines do look at the cities/countries that they visit and try to cater to a wide range of experiences. You are more likely to find a tour company who has put together a package that includes the cruise as well as specific day trips to target specific groups. Also, there maybe companies who charter smaller vessels that target specific areas for the express reason of visiting certain sites. Peter Sommer Travel uses a small sailing ship to do tours in Turkey. thats just one example, there maybe more.. check google.
