One reason is so the other members of the band can hear him at an equal distance to their amps. He is the "timekeeper" for the music after all.

Edit: So maybe the person who rated this "not helpful" will offer an explanation why, or maybe even a better answer..................................................................didn't think so.

Mostly because, unlike the lead and bass guitarists, the drummer cannot pick up, move his instrument and play it at the same time. A drum set takes up a lot of space and requires the drummer to remain in a fixed place. Because of this, the drummer is put in the back so that he does not crowd the front of the stage and block the rest of the band. Some stages allow the drummer to be elevated slightly so that even though he is positioned in the back, he or she can still be seen by the audience.

The drummer's set up is usually the reason he is places in the back... before the use of PAs and other amplification, placing the drums further back would help normalize the sound levels.

There are actually some bands that don't have the drummer in the back now. A few bands even have the drummer as a lead singer with a setup in the front/center. Without a really good PA setup, this doesn't usually work very well.

Even though the drummer is in the back - the drummer lead's the groug - He/She has to be able to hear , and watch - that is one reason - The speaker's are set in back by the drummer or the speaker's are facing toward's the drummer - That is the way it,has been for the group's that I've been in - I just had to hear what was going on - so I would know how to react -- Quickly --- Pattijo
