I'm on okcupid.com but I just joined for the quizzes. I guess if you know what you want and everything it should do pretty good. You can pick what kind of relationship you're looking for (long term, casual dating, friends, someone to screw) and it tells you how well someone matches you based on questions you answer. Apparently there's a LOT of questions. People with 5 stars have answered well over 1000 questions. I'm only around 200, so... I have a while.
Anyway, try it and see if you like it. It's totally free.

- It's the only free online dating service I've ever been to that is free. Most of the ones that claim to be free have hidden charges for services you want to use, even just to email a potential mate. I've been to several dating services, and most of them have disappointed me quickly.

  That one big well known one that I'd rather not even name is such total and complete BULL$h*t in the way it suckers people in with sign up totally for free, which is absolutely useless unless you like to be teased into blowing a fortune on maybe finding out that people you might have absolutely ZERO interest in, are all excited about 'you' for your profile input.
  Then you can get charged either a fortune for a month or a fortune for a year(which is a cheaper rate per month) It all depends on how desperate you are to setlle for whoever is offered up.

- I was overwhelmed, after joined. So many men wanted to meet me. But unfortunately, I didn't feel any sort of desire to meet them IRL. I don't think I can really develop a connection with anyone I meet, online. I have to be physically close. I guess they were just sort of desperate. I'm not ugly, but I'm not hot, either. But I stopped going. I'm sure, they've given up on me by now. Interest will only last for so long. It's been several months, since I've visited that site.
  
  I'm not exactly eager to join a dating site. It's a blessing and a curse, but I'm less desperate (and ambitious!) for dating than average people seem to be. So of course I'm going to be turned off, instantly, by having to pay for a site I am--at best--ambivalent about joining. I figured that time wasted is the only thing I'll be wasting. - My money is important to me too, to me to pay the ridiculous fees to these pathetic romantic vampires is sadistic and sad in the very least.
  It is the most disgusting form of legalized pimping and prostitution around. Real life prostitutes get more for their involvement than those who allow themselves to be pimped by any of these sites, but at least plentyofish truly is free, or so I'm told.
  Guess I'm forever skeptical of even the most outright offers of kindness.

I met my (now) wife on www.dating.co.uk I has thought it would only include British people but, because it is free, it has people from all over. My wife is Ukrainian, and there were plenty of Russians and Indians, and Africans and Americans when I was using it.

Please just remember that patience is a virtue. There is someone out there for you but they might not have found the right site yet.

I really think the best ones aren't free. Do you want to find someone who's out there experimenting with online dating and chatting and might not ever meet in person, or someone who is serious about it and willing to make a financial and time investment in it?

If you want to just text and socialize online, stay with the free sites. If you want to meet in person, better to go with the quality sites that will cost.

POF.com and okcupid.com are the top free dating sites. However if your religious, you may want to find a free dating site in your religion. This way there is less conflict in your relationship if you both have different religious foundations. For example, if you are Adventist, try http://TheSingleAdventist.com/ It has free online dating for Seventh-day Adventist Singles.

There is also Catholic dating and LDS (Mormon), Baptists.... etc etc. good luck.
