    All animals require salts and minerals and if they don't receive enough in their food they will get it where they can :)

    Most animals lick salty things because they need salt just as we humans do. Just as you see cats or dogs eating grass, it's their body prompting them to take in what they need in order to survive. Most of the time the grass eating thing is to settle their stomach and/or make them throw up whatever doesn't agree with them. My cat likes to lick on our fireplace grate for some reason. I assume theres something there that he needs or he's about two french fries short of a Happy Meal!
