I would not worry so much about what other people think. Get the car that best fits your needs and budget.

No, I'd think you are practical and give thought to money management and utility. I admire that. But maybe it is uncool.

Hells no! Many of the better Sport Compacts were/are hatchbacks; the old Civics (3-doors were the best), VW Golfs (including the GTI), Renault Clios, the new WRX (5-door), the Nissan Pulsar GTi.... the list goes on.
